I disagree with this comment. NYC has 5 parts/boroughs. While it is true that Manhattan has the most famous tourist attractions and it should be the focus point for the tourists. That doesn't mean that there are no other parts of the city for an average tourist to visit.
Most taxis take highways and people don't see much of Queens if they go from JFK to Manhattan.
A hidden gem in Queens is the Forest Hills Gardens Square (next to the Forest Hills LIRR train station) which looks like one has stepped into a small medieval village in Europe.
Sure. The Independent film studios are in LIC and Astoria. There's a big casino in Ozone Park. New York City's two airports are in Queens. The beaches in the Rockaways are now popular. There's a lot of ethnic cuisine in Queens, and a big attraction to NYC is restaurants from all around the world. Jackson Heights has a big Latin club scene, both gay and straight. For those into South Asian stuff, there's little India in Jackson Heights. Flushing, NY is a big Chinatown/Asian neighborhood. One can go to baseball games in Flushing Meadows Park.

...and the US Open (tennis). But most importantly is the ethnic cuisine variety that is not widely available anywhere else in the country in such close quarters.
I totally agree with tourists seeing the other boroughs, but not until they've gotten their "tourist" stuff done. Imaging going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower or not seeing Big Ben or B-Palace when in London. Plus, I also think that those of us who live here forget how spectacular something like Times Square or Lady Liberty can be to those who have never seen it before.
But yes...City Island, the Bronx Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park (the Unisphere!), the Rockaways, DUMBO, Prospect Park, etc., etc...are all amazing sites to see if you have never seen them before. And they do give a much broader understanding of what "NYC" stands for (in other words, not just south of 125th St. in Manhattan).
But whatever they see...I hope the tourists keep coming to our fair city, keep enjoying the sites and keep spending their money here!
Tourists and clueless transplants should stay in Midtown and leave the rest of the city to the New Yorkers
