I may need to go from Manhattan to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx once or twice a week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and I was wondering if it is safe to ride the line 5 subway to and from the E.180 street subway stop at night. I'm new in the city and have been given conflicting stories by friends and would really appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks!

it's not the safest, try and stay with the crowd exiting the station when you get there, when returning avoid being the only person around while waitng for the train, stick to the center of the trains, avoid any wearing any jewelry, ipods and you should be ok.

Wouldn't you take the train to Morris Park or the next station across the Pelham Parkway?

These areas are a WHOLE lot safer than 180th st at night. 180th st is pretty run down like the rest of the Bronx. Morris Park & Pelham Parkway are more normal middle-class suburban areas.

I just rode the 6 last night with no problems (1am). Trains are still suprisingly crowded (or at least, all seats taken). Stay in the conductor's car and use common sense. And I'll repeat what I say all the time..."Don't start none, won't be none".

Thanks for the replies and good advices. I was told the easiest way to get to AECOM is to get off at E.180th st and then take the line 21 bus. Is it safer to walk to AECOM from another stop than transferring to the bus at E.180th st? Thanks again!

I am pretty sure you could take a bus from Pelham Parkway. Plus, the buses on Pelahm parkway definitely have to be running more frequently at night than those on Morris Park Ave.

If you get off at Morris Park or Pelham Parkway, its not going to be a direct change, like at 180th st, but it will definitely be safer.

I guess you should check out 180th st though, its not THAT bad, but its certainly not the best neighborhood at night.

You should be fine getting off at E 180th. The neighborhood around the station, and especially to the west is ****, but the bus is right there. Once you head east and pass Bronxdale Avenue into the Morris Park area it starts getting better. Bx21 right?

Just keep an eye out while waiting. Area is not the greatest, very desolite. At least the transit precinct is right there if anything happens.

My friend lived on campus around there, and she used to take the 6 train to Parkchester and took the bus along Eastchester Road uptown. I forgot what bus it was, but she was always going home at night. Maybe you can found out from the people on campus what's the best route.
