I like Bensonhurst. My favourite thing to do there is shop at American Place and National Wholesale Liquidators. The streets are quiet and the houses are nice. I don't know how comfortable I'd feel living there being that I'm Afro Caribbean but I think it's a lovely area.

Back in the day, some folk up in there would have called you a "moolie" and tried to chase you out! But that neighborhood's come a looooooooong way from the Willie Turks and Yusef Hawkins tragedies!

/\Italian Bensonhurst died becuase of greed and extreme racism. Bensonhurst is an excellent nieghborhood that would be top notch even if it was in Nassau. Sadly, Italians will never know that becuase A) everybody has got to have a big-ass mcmanshion and B) somebody saw one asian/russian face and everybody **** their pants and sold. Sad.

it is sad. like scatman points out, the neighborhood had its issues back in the day. it's not cool to yell, 'moolie' at someone just for walking by and start chasing them down the street with a baseball bat. thugs are thugs, whether white, black, or green. having said that, if my memory serves, some (not all, but def. some) of those b-hurst boys were just defending their area. the place started going to sh*t when all of the 'ethnic diversity' began. originally, neighborhood guys would throw you a beat down if you rolled into the joint and started trouble in the local bars. for better or worse, that doesn't happen anymore.

I agree, and I'm half Black!

What's ultamitely sad is that if you think you're going to escape the "changes" by crossing the Verrazano, you're wrong. North Shore is already terrible and as the congestion and ****ty infastructure catches up to SI, that place will be more slummy than ENY.

Bensonhurst, for that matter, the great majority of Brooklyn, is not a bad place to live. If blonde girls and gay couples are buying in Bed-Stuy, what does that say about the Italians of South Brooklyn?

Can you answer your own question for me? What does it say about the Italians of South Brooklyn? I'm a blonde, single mom looking at places in Brooklyn to move to with my son. Would we be welcome in a place such as Bensonhurst?

i think you'll be ok, but just make sure you check out the neighborhood. go there during the day and at night. see who's walking around. also look at bay ridge. i moved there from b-hurst a couple years ago, and i like it. although, now i feel a social responsibility to move back to b-hurst b/c it is going to the dogs

Honestly, you don't see many blonde people here.

Lots in Bay Ridge, though. Higher concentration of Irish, German ancestries.

Where would you be moving from?
