Well, I have been living in Bensonhurst / Bath Beach for 19 years now. It was mostly Italians,Hispanic and me Greek. Then Russians started comming in, now it is the Chinese, a lot of Chinese.
The area is still very affordable, but it takes longer to get to the City.
Transportation is all over, stores are all over. Bensonhurst just doesn't have good restaurants, don't know why???
It is a sleepy place, nothing exciting happens here. Regular working people. Some areas of Bensonhurst / Bath Beach are actually depressing.
Older homes are being torn down and 3 story generic condos are being built, taking up yet more parking spaces, did I mention parking sucks.....well, it does.
The bicycle path at the Bay hasn't been touched since it was layed and it is in dire need of repair. Past the Verazzano it has been re-done and looks great.
It is still a very safe neighborhood, and thankfully the yuppies and hipsters (God I hate that term) will not come here......
Yuppies = People that spend tons of money for rent for glorified tenements.
Hipsters = Transplants from other states that think Williamsburg is great.
Sorry, had to go there...... EEK !!!!!!

A slideshow I put of some of the photos I took in Bensonhurst earlier this year. Plan to take more during mid-Spring.

Nice pictures, but you seemed to focus only on the Italian stores, which in reality aren't as prevalent as they used to be. You should have taken pictures of all of the Chinese and Russian stores all over the place.

I focused on the Italian places to try and show that Bensonhurst hasn't completely lost it's Italian character. Really, if I wanted to take pictures of Chinese Restaurants, I'd go to Flushing, or Russian restaurants, I'd go to Sheepshead Bay or Brighton Beach.
It's a good thing I took those while I can, because I wouldn't be surprised if some of those places wouldn't even be there in the next few decades.
I'll probably go and take pictures in Bay Ridge pretty soon, anyone know how that is compared to Bensonhurst?

Bay Ridge is more solidly middle class, overall. Lots of Italians and Irish around. The neighborhood's about 75-percent white but it has a fair amount of diversity, though a good deal less than Bensonhurst does now.

wow. everyone but eugene should go live in the confederate south with your attitudes. I am a white person moving from hipster greenpoint to bensonhurst for the fresher air, cheaper rent and the diversity. I know those hard working families that happen to be from those other countries are threatening. Im actually glad that its not as white as it was because I would never want to be lumped in with the ignorant attitudes and values, nor would I want to breed anyone into an area that fostered hate. I guess its OK if people are From Italy, it doesnt count as a foreign country because people are white, right?

Russians don't really care about it. As long as you're not black.

So are you saying that now Russians are basically as racist towards black people as Italians are???
