I'll give you some good neighborhoods as a pro. As in any other city, there are the good neighborhoods and there are the bad neighborhoods.
For the good, try Midtown, Upper East Side, Upper West Side in Manhattan. Riverdale, Van Cortlandt Village, Woodlawn, Country Club, and Throgs Neck in the Bronx. Astoria, Woodhaven, and Jamaica Estates in Queens.

Who said it was bad? Not New Yorkers! The others are just jealous!

The pros are that's its a fun, vibrant city. You can't really be bored here. There is always something to do, no matter the price.
There are a lot of cons, more than I care to mention.

i hear too many sob stories of people who move away from nyc cause they're fed up of rent costs, etc. then they call me from wherever they're at and they're bored outta their skull

But from what I read here, aren't people being priced out of the city and into the boroughs? Then on top of that, I read people being priced out of certain nice bouroughs even farther away? I would love to live in the city, but unless your poor or very wealthy, how do people make it?

Priced out of what nice boroughs? If people are living in Manhattan, they tend to stay. That goes for the people living in Queens and Brooklyn and the other boroughs, too, unless they're looking for a bigger apartment or a house....
How do people do it? They don't waste money on having a car, they go to work, work hard and save their money. They prioritize spending to what they consider important and know that they can't have EVERYTHING, IMMEDIATELY, when they first have an impulse.

It's, if you CAN make it there you'll make it anywhere. BIG difference. Sorry, but it was bothering me.

Don't forget neighborhoods like Rego Park, Forest Hills, Forest Garden Hills, Kew Garden hills and Kew Gardens, Bayside (some parts of it), Little Neck, Douglaston etc.
NYC is good in the daytime. At night time, beware. But it's like any other city- there are good places and terrible places. It's the home of some of the richest Americans and some of the poorest.

Depend on what your reasons are to be living in New York.... NYC could be paradise for some, and hell for others....personally I love New York City (Queens resident all my life),but it is real expensive and now that my family is looking for a house its become near impossible even with 2 decent jobs...There are some great neighborhoods that you can walk around at night and others that you better not try...People are generally not as rude as they are runored to be, and you will make friends here...Had a friend who moved up here form North Carolina got a job lived here for a year just to experience the 'big apple' and see if he could survive..... when it was time to by a house moved back home....to this day he says he loved the experience....Lots of Luck to You!!
