I just bought a house here in what was considered a "dangerous area" by people when they feel a need to make a negative comment on my neighborhood. 1. Soho and Harlem were once "dangerous areas" to the fools who passed up opportunities to buy back then and make hundreds of thousands. 2. People here are wonderful and friendly, hard working mostly in teaching and healthcare fields 3. Far better than snobby, complaining yuppie types who are constantly comparing what you have, who you are, etc (I lived in the suburbs for many years and had more difficulty there with white folks ((I am Italian by the way)) calling the cops if they hear a pin drop, etc.. 4. Have some cooth. It is inappropriate to comment on choices someone makes of where to live and buy a home. Do you own a home? No. So, shut up and mind your business. Like the folks in my neghborhood do.

Harlem has one of the highest violent crime rates in the city. It is still a dangerous area.

Not all of South Jamaica is a "dangerous area", the immediate Merrick Blvd area isn't dangerous at all. I mean it's not what I'd call nice but it's not dangerous. There's also other pockets if non-dangerous parts too.
South Jamaica is geographically one of the largest neighborhoods in NYC, the whole thing isn't gonna be all bad all the time.
Don't get me wrong, most of South Jamaica is bad but not all of it.
I also wouldn't classify Harlem as 100% bad either, I've never felt "scared" in Harlem, it's improved a whole lot on top of that.

The closer you get to Long Island, the more quiet and suburban it gets to where there's almost nobody on the street at night. Closer to Jamaica Avenue is a bit busier, but you're more likely to run into drunk homeless people than a group of thugs or anything. Most violence around here seems to be among people who run in similar circles. It's not the nicest area by any stretch, but it's pretty easy to avoid trouble by minding your own business.

Fun thread. Born and raised in South Jamaica, but I've been in San Diego the last 10 years. I still own a house in Jamaica, 102ave and Remington Street.
I'm from the generation that caused most of the problems in the 90s, but most of that stuff is long gone. Jamaica Queens has been gentrified mildly by the Guyanese and similar. If you aren't street smart, you can get robbed, but unless you are looking for trouble, you'll probably be ok. The number of rapes that occur in the area is upsetting, however.

That's more west of Sutphin Blvd. And I don't think being street smart (or not) would prevent/cause a robbery from/to happen(ing) unless of course you stay home or have nothing valuable on you.
Guy R Brewer is like the "spine" of South Jamaica. That portable NYPD tower thing is always somewhere along there, right now it's at the intersection with Foch Blvd across the street from Baisley Projects. Before it was near 40 projects and before that it was in Rochdale.

all those blocks off of sutphin are bad....glassboro's 1 of the worst, a whole lot of gang activity.
and how could i 4get south road? crackhead neighborhood.
linden blvd from guy brew pretty much to rockaway blvd aint too hot.
from driving thru south jamaica hundreds of times and hanging out there, the neighborhood overall is not that desirable.
oh yeah i forgot foch blvd and 142 that area looks so run down its not even funny. reminds me of the ghetto downsouth. actually thats what most of southside reminds me of.

Oh yeah I remenber south road , its good now. Back in the day early seventies wow south road was a tru mess. Sutphin blvd has improved a lot cause honey , i remeber when. Now Rochdale Village has gone down and it truly USED to be the jewel of south Jamaica.

I used 2 live in the Northern part of Jamaica, Queens next 2 Jamaica Estates back in the day of the '70's and late '60's. It was really nice and beautiful back then but now, u have a lot of ethnic people living there like Indian people from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. U also have a lot of Carribean people living there but, nicer and better 2 reside in this part of Jamaica, Queens instead of the Southern part of it-All of Jamaica, Queens has changed dramatically 4 the worse. There is absolutely nothing there that will attract any1 who wants 2 live in a Queens area that's really nice with all kinds of nice things-Nice things like cafes, coffee houses like Starbucks, all kinds of nice bars 4 every1 of all lifestyles, bathhouses, swimming pools, and nice nightclubs or discotheques. Jamaica, Queens has nothing nice or special 2 attract any1 2 come there-Whether it is 2 visit it 4 fun, or live there-Jamaica stinks and it's finished as an area 2 live in Queens and the whole NYC-The only thing that keeps it going is all the major public transportation like the subway, the buses, the LIRR and Kennedy Airport.
