Southside Jamaica Queens
I recall that starting from the early 80s to the late 90s there was a HUGE crack cocaine epidemic in Southside where notorious criminals like Fat Cat, Pappy Mason, and the most notorious Supreme McGriff and his Supreme Team resided. The area has always given off bad vibes. But everyone around the country has heard of the DRAMATIC and i mean DRAMATIC crime reduction up to 85% or so in areas of New York, NY similar to these. Can you guys tell me if this is true and if this area is now safe to live in or not?

Still a bad neighborhood. Most of the areas that were real bad when the city was breaking it's own records year after year are still bad neighborhoods. Since the downfall of crack, the neighborhoods have experenced less killing among drug dealers and junkies, as well as a drop in overall violent crime thanks to better policing methods learned over the years. The drops in crime are not as dramatic as the mayors, real estate and media want you to think. NYC is a major city like anywhere else. There are good and bad neighborhoods. The bad parts are as bad as anywhere else. The good as good as any other city.
The Southside Jamaica, Queens is not an area you want to live in. Lots of poverty and the problems that come with that. One of the worst neighborhoods in Queens.

Yeah what you say makes sense. New York is a global city and its gonna have its problems...to say that crime has been reduced so much is an overstatement....its a big deal.....however i come from Karachi, Pakistan, which is the second largest city in the world with the population exceeding 18 million and if we had a police department like the NYPD, things would have been A LOT better and the organized gang violence would have come to an end

Southside Jamaica is arguably the worst part of queens. Between that and the Queensbridge Projects area, is the competition for the worst part of Queens.

My wife works at the Library in Jamaica and believe me you don't want to live there, it is a dangerous area at night.

Blah, I would argue Far Rockaway could contend for the KILLER of Queens. I remember last summer they had two major police shootings in one night. One involving a shotgun to an RMP. Another in a housing project (Red Fern). Can't forget about the ongoing gang war between the projects out there too. Area so bad even the Long Island side is ****ty.

Welcome to NYC, segregation city. Both income and race wise.
Did you ever get to see that video of the grandmother getting beat down by a mugger in her building lobby a month of two back. Was pretty popular on the net. That was Jamaica Estates.

Jamaica Estates is a funny place. The main entrance to it is right in the middle of the ghetto. But a lot of it is gated off. I think it is the perfect picture of modern NYC. The two worlds. The rich and the poor.
It is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city, possibly the wealthiest in Queens.
