Hi! I'm beggining an internship that will last 1 year in December, and I have to find an apartment to rent. I'm going there with my best friend and we are two 24-year-old French women.
Where do you think is the safest place to rent considering the fact that my internship is in Yonkers and my friend's in lower manhattan, and that we can only put $1500 in rent? Thank you very much for your help!!!

$1500 total or $1500 each??

You need to find something close to the 4-5-6 trains (East Side) so you'll be able to easily catch a Metro North Train to Yonkers for your job. You pick up Metro North Trains at Grand Central 42nd Street and 125th Street stations.

How far from your office is the Metro North station in Yonkers? If not walking distance, be sure to factor in the expense of a cab ride 2x per day.

My recommendation is to live as close to Grand Central Station as possible.

If the rent is $1500 total, I would look to share a 1BR in Riverdale. You would be minutes from Yonkers, accessible by Metro-North or the bus. And, your friend could get to Lower Manhattan easily on the BxM18 express bus. It's part of The Bronx, but is a very safe neighborhood that does have some affordable apartments in family (i.e., not full amenity luxury) buildings and 2 and 3 family townhouses that have apartments as well.

Yonkers is fairly large, geographically, with multiple train stations, so it's a factor of where the office is located regarding which mode of transportation would be easiest for you.
