Actually, Chicago's murder rate peaked in 92 at about 920 but with less than half of NYC's population(1990 NYC 7 million, Chicago 2.8 million). Violent crime declined throughout the 90s but when they tore down the projects, those former residents moved into rival neighborhoods spurring big time drug/gang wars. Now, its bad again especially on the West and South Sides but the North has some bad pockets too. The CPD lost control and crime is a major reason(along with his sick wife and possible exposed corruption) why Mayor Daley decided to retire.
The only hoods that really improved in Chicago were some gentrying ones on the North Side, and areas where the projects were torn down especially around the Cabrini Green area which is adjacent to an affluent area. A lot of solid middle class neighborhoods in 1990 on the NW and SW sides are now gang-infested bad hoods.
They tore down Cabrini Greens? Why did they tear down the projects?

Its been in the process since the late 90s. The last high-rise White building was recently vacated and will be torn down soon. The townhomes are still there but not for much longer. I was in Chicago for Thanksgiving and that area is completely different, tons of high-end condos and apartments there now. Cabrini Green is almost an afterthought.
Add to Edit, why they tore it down? They won't flat come out and say it but its PRIME Real Estate, close to the gold coast, downtown, not far from Bucktown, Kennedy Expy, just great location/transportation. It was all about economics, too prime of a location to have projects honestly. It sucks that people were displaced though.
Umm...you can thank the people of NYC for why it is much safer now than Chicago. Only those with little knowledge of NYC during the 90s thru today would say Guiliani did much of anything. Just because you hear something repeated several times, does not make it true. And it was the people of NYC that saved it, not Guiliani or any one person for that matter.
Wrong Sobro. Guiliani came into office when crime was at very high levels. RG had a very specfic strategy to fight the crime. They decided that they would crack down significantly on the "niuscence" crimes like loitering, graffiti, squeegi guys (remember them?), etc. And in doing that they would get a lot of people off the street who commit a lot more violent crimes. Before RG got there, people were saying that NYC was too difficult to govern. You don't hear that anymore.
I understand what he did and didn't do, how he did it, and what was the result. And you are giving credit where it is not deserved..and ignoring the fact that it was at the local level, with community organizations working hand in hand with the city and police that saved NYC, not Guiliani. And that is still happening, and has grown substantially, which is why NYC continues to get more safe, not less.
I am not affiliated with any party as they are equally incompetent...you must be a Republican...because nobody else would care to ask the question or believe it has anything to do with crime in NYC.
So you have guessed wrong, and asking the question demonstrates you no longer have an argument to support your statement.

You give Guiliani too little credit. He was a driving force in cleaning up NY. Even though many of you don't agree, I liked it better when bums panhadlers and low level street performers were out of sight. They are now slowly creeping back into the landscape.
