Hello,
I grew up in NYC and I am trying to get back there now.
I have lived in the Washington DC area for over 10 years (its driving me crazy) and my biggest concern is finding work in NYC ASAP.
So here are some questions:
1) Do I need to live there first to find work?
I get the feeling that I'm not getting interviews because I'm not there. I'm not sure whether that's true or not.

2) I'm in the IT industry. I have a history of working with companies that have the Federal government as a client. Although that now makes me hot to hire here, it looks like in NYC I need knowledge of a particular industry. Is that true?

3) What can I do before I move to get a job there? That's my bottom line.

Thanks all! Its strange feeling closest to the culture but furthest from the job market. I'm hoping to get past that!

For most jobs, you probably aren't legally required to live within the city's borders. But it would certainly help with the commute!

As to what you can do to get a job before you move... 1) do what you have to do, including a search outside your field. 2) consider the possibility that you may have to reschedule that move!

Good luck in the search. I'm in the opposite situation but still born and raised in Brooklyn. Quite amazing that the DC area grew on me so much that I'm ready to relocate back down there the first chance I get!

Also, will shoot you a direct message sometime tomorrow to see if I can assist in some form.
