The truth about Harlem 2010 is that it is an evolving community, and still has higher than average crime in NYC. Nobody proclaims Harlem is "safe", unless they are trying to sell you something, like a condo, but this rule applies everywhere in the world, not just Harlem. If you are uncomfortable around people of color, you will fee unsafe. If you are comfortable around people of color, and are not involved in the drug trade and use basic common sense, you will feel safe. This fact applies everywhere, and not just NYC.
Harlem is making huge strides and is attracting a really diverse global population. I went to a roommate-finder event in Harlem on Saturday at Lenox Lounge (125th and Lenox Ave). You will pass a fancy french restuarant with out door seating, cafes, etc to get to this place. And what did I find? 90% of those seeking a room, or roommates, were "white" and from outside NYC, and probably half of those were outside the US. And what did they all have in common: They wanted to live in Harlem. But don't take my word for it....they should have the pics on the website shortly: http://roommateswantednyc.com/
I took a solo trip a couple of years ago and spent an afternoon in Harlem. I was fine and enjoyed it. But I had planned to go back that night to the Apollo, and 'something' told me not to attempt it. So I listened to my instincts and didn't.
