I cannot believe how many people in this city have not heard of the parade. I guess since my window faces 7th avenue and I see it every year, but still.....Any way, the parade has gotten to the point where there are more shootings happening. The last time I went there was a shooting on 135th as the parade was going by. The parade stopped for about 5 minutes while everyone was ducking for cover, then it continued as nothing happened. Every year there are shootings durning the parade of which about 200,000 people attend. Many people that I know will not attend again until the shootings stop. I still dont understand how so many that were born and raised in the city dont know of this. It is every year in the middle of September and marches up 7th ave to 145th street except this year when the parade ended around 135th street due to the violence of past parades.

Living near the parade is annoying because cops block off the side streets and treat me like a criminal for trying to get to my own apt. "Where are you trying to go, sir?" "Um, I live on this block." I should put it on my calendar so I remember to be out of town for it next year... don't enjoy living in a police state.

That sad. I go the the West Indian day parade every year and love the good nature aspects of it, not to mention the great food. It's sad to hear all this negative reaction to a parade devoted to the first historically African people of our country.

I have never heard of that parade neither. The most that I hear is about the National Puerto Rican Parade, Dominican Parade, and the West Indian.

I've never heard of it until randomly running into it on the internet, but I'm not from NY. I'm surprised at how many NYers never heard of it

They advertise it more on the (hip hop/r&b) radio stations. But over the years it has changed due to people not knowing how to act either from violence or drinking. The parade route seems to get shorter each year. It use to be a fun day or culture now I have no words for it. But I continue to support it in hopes of it getting better.
