I actually have love for Staten Island. I dated a wonderful girl there once and I LOVED taking the boat trip all the way from the Bronx to see her and when she would come to the Bronx or go to Manhattan with me we would take the boat ride back. It was always a lot of fun and a good time.

Also, I snuck into that abandoned asylum in Staten Island. I forgot the name but my friends and I snuck into their and the abandoned boat place. I also been to some great parties in Staten Island. Don't worry, I have plenty of love for the borough.

My grandma (who grew up in SI) used to joke... "God made Staten Island so that Queens would seem interesting"

I like SI.
My whole dads side of the family basically hopped of Ellis Island and on to Staten Island- This is when the Island barely had 150K people.

Mayor Bloomberg would walk the St Patty's day parade and would literally come inside my Aunts house and eat the corned beef and cabbage she made. He's been doing it for the past couple years (all because of a random phone call invitation), but I went two holidays ago and had a meal with the Mayor of NYC. That's one of my many experiences on the island. I've also been to the mall once and I'd never do it again, I really don't want to explain.

The stigma in SI is over hyped- They knock the Italian American dominance (I'm Italian), but in reality- The Italian culture and food there is wonderful- I love Italians, I'd never live anywhere that doesn't have them. I live in Newark, so I deal with the same crap as far as stereotypes and misconceptions go, but I'm happy here- IDC what people "think"- Most of the smack talk is from an experience at the airport or turnpike; how insightful. You just have to get over it- you live in friggen Todt Hill! That's basically the Beverly Hills of the Island! Quit your blubbering.

I now live on Long Island --- and I can imagine that Long Island is about 500x worse than Staten Island. I hate it here but have no way out at the moment. I'm working to save my $$ to get the heck off this overpriced sandbar and back to the city I love.
Hey! I happen to love our overpriced sandbar.

I was shocked too when someone told me that. I thought it was the bad part of New Jersey.

I'm aware that 'Jersey-shore-like' folks live here, but no one I know is like that. We don't have orange tans and such. Maybe the JS people live on the South Shore.

Lolol. I've always said that Staten Island being part of NYC is the best thing to ever happen to Queens. Without SI, they'd be the "odd man out" when compared to the rest of the boroughs.

I also agree with NYChistorygal, is there "guidos" on Staten Island? Sure (though not many like the ones on Jersey Shore. That dude Vinny, the most normal one, is from SI. Most of the "guidos" I've had experience with look like him). But there's also ones in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. It's just not as funny to talk about that for whatever reason. And I live my daily life, the majority of which is done so on the North Shore of Staten Island, and I encounter approx. 0 "guidos" a day. I see black people, white people, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Middle Easterners and usually Asians and Dominicans every day, but very few "guidos." I know that's not as funny though. Send SNL and MTV my apologies.

And to whoever mentioned the mall, the place is a cesspool. Ugh.
