No, it's not just you. Problem is, they're the only game in town so they can pretty much do what they want. The bigwigs ride around in limos that we pay for and the working class has to struggle to buy a MetroCard to ride the subway/bus.

My theory is that the top people in the MTA should all take a major salary decrease until they can get the MTA straightened out and in order without constant fare hikes!

Well, there's a reason for that "A" in MTA. Nelson Rockefeller was being pretty slick when he created MTA in 1965--the "A" stands for "authority," a technical legal distinction meaning that they aren't really accountable to anyone. Except, at least officially, the Governor of New York. So unless you can get the Governor's attention (and most often, going up the ladder through local representatives is the way to do it), people can moan and whine about what MTA does until their tongues fall out, but nothing is going to be accomplished. Period.

This post comes up again, and again, and again.

Buses & Subways are the cheapest MTA sponsored systems, and you should count your blessings that they are so under-priced and subsidized by tax payers (in your local 11 counties), and private car owners (statewide).

An equidistant trip on subways is generally 3x (yes three times) more expensive per mile traveled on commuter rail. Commuter rail riders pay the same MTA taxes (payroll, license fees, car registration) as NYC residents- yet their services cost 3x more.

60% of a car riders tolls, goes directly to subsidizing the other MTA products (the majority towards subway and buses). It costs $5.50 to go over a crossing, there is NO unlimited package- at 22 work days in a week, that's $242 vs a MetroCard that gets you unlimited for $104.
You might think, well wow, 40% must go towards bridges & tunnels- BS; about 30% of the whole collection money goes towards collections (agents / ez pass) itself. What a waste.

Subway and Bus fare is set ARTIFICIALLY LOW. Real cost of operations (with payroll as it is) would require subway rides to be $5 each way, and offer no unlimited cards.
Think that's nuts? That's what everyone else on the MTA systems are paying.

The agency (MTA) is a nightmare, but believe me, NYCT riders are getting the lions share of what they offer.

grant, for the most part i agree. 104 a month is still cheap, but it is rough going up from 89 when most people have budgets and im not struggling, but def budgeting

Default Metrocards

Hello, friends:

I've found a few ways New Yorkers can offset the coming subway and bus fare increases. Isn't Google great?

1. eBay: (e-Bay) people are selling used and new MetroCards all the time for about 5% to 10% off. Search under "metrocards." Make sure the seller has good reputation.

2. Craigslist: Search under "Metrocards" and you can find discounted cards at around 10% off.

3. Moderator cut: Unable to verify that the posted link is not a scam.

4. Moderator cut: Discussion of illegal activity -- those MetroCards are for use by the intended person only, and are not to be sold.

Anyone have any other ideas or places to go? Let's brainstorm!
