With all the Yuppies taking over and genrification going on, is NYC losing its character?

Never.

There's a distinct NYC flavor that that crap will never touch. Unlike San Francisco, which, IMHO, was totally ruined by dot-com geeks.

Maybe, but does anybody feel that the "Anything can happen" or "New York Minute" saying is not true anymore in NYC?

/\I'm sick of seeing this ****. I hope the yuppies all abandon NYC. I'll laugh while large sections of the city go back to being the drug-infested, burned down ghettos they were before. Then I won't have to hear all of you *****.

Dude, I hate yuppies as much as you. But wanting NYC to become crime-infested again is ridiculous.

I think there is some truth to it. Especially in Manhattan more than anything. Its starting to happen in Brooklyn too. A lot of neighborhoods are kinda starting to blend into each other. It used to be that every area had its own distinct style, it's not like that as much anymore.

Its happening in Queens as well. Someone said it best, that NYC is gaining white population but Wall Street White Collar whites while the Irish, Italian native NY'ers are moving out of NYC to LI / NJ & the south.

Even Flushing Queens is getting to be somewhat white yuppie extending the push east from Jackson Heights & Woodside which are already as expensive as Park Slope or Williamsburg.

NYC is great if you are white, under the age of 30, make over $200,000 a year or more, into trendy restaurants, clubs & designer clothing and basically a follower to consumerism & material things especially cars & clothing.

If you are working class or making less than $100,000 a year & the 'wrong color' or race for that particular nabe, then it can be hell especially in the more insular parts of NYC like Bayside Queens & South Brooklyn.

Future Cop, you totally took my posts wrong. I'm mocking you. You all wish the city reverted back to it's 1975 form. I don't. The Middle-class italians/Irish/PRicans are leaving and not coming back. Stop wishing for the 1920s. Without yuppies, NYC's popualtion would probably still be around 7 million (ie: 1980 census). The yuppies came even before the Chinese and Dominicans. Once the Dominicans/Mexicans/Chinese/Koreans/Indians/Jamaicans/Africans/Arabs all had their way with the boroughs and find middle class status, that's it. Were back to a shrinking city.

I wish the days of Frotunoff, swing clubs, middle-class neighborhoods, graffitied subways and grandmaster flash would come back to. But they're not. Yuppies keep the city running.
