I wonder if anyone can help me with the proper protocol to signing a lease and paying the fee/rent/security? Is it normal to sign and pay for the fee/rent/security without getting the key first? The current tenant is still living at the place, but should leave in a few weeks. So I'll be getting the keys from the super by my move-in date, supposedly. Is there anyway to protect myself from being scammed or cheated? If anyone can share their experience regarding this that'll be great! Thanks

um i think at the time that you sign the lease and pay you're suppose to get your key atleast thats how it was for my sister she got her key as soon as she signed/payed

Default you arrange

a day with the landlord that you will have the money so you can sign the lease and get the keys

my lease started Wednesday 6/1 but I think i recall giving the money and signing the lease and getting the keys on Memorial Day weekend a few days prior to 6/1. it was a nice arrangement as i got a chance to move gradually. my actual physical move in day was 6/6

So people typically don't provide any payment before obtaining the keys right? Even if you sign the lease a week or 2 before you actually move in?

If you are dealing with a management company, usually all the payment is due at the lease signing.
Then you get the keys from the super when you move in.

Gotcha! But I wonder if there's a possibility of them not giving me the key and keeping my money? I guess I'm just a little paranoid but how do I protect myself against this?

Please renters, beware of the times now,if you are signing or looking to sign a lease,or rental agreement, you should do this in front of a third party witness. You may be able to pay a realtor a small buyers agent fee to witness and sign the agreement. but never give up any money without signing the agreement by both of you and getting a copy and the keys at the same time.
