It's NYC people!

I guess that proves they put profits before pets.... "in a city of rich people, a LOT extra". I wouldn't go to them for any reason at all. Not the way they take advantage of people's emotions.

I agree. If the price stated by the OP is correct, then very apparently there is a market for this service, because otherwise they would have priced themselves out of existence already.

Also, as with all equipment-heavy medical services, it is fixed costs – not variable costs (or even profits) – that are the biggest consideration when determining prices. And if that facility is (a) prepared for a large variety of different emergencies and (b) stays open during barely frequented hours, it naturally has high fixed costs AND has to spread those fixed costs across fewer patients; due to economies of scale this may not necessarily be a linear function, hence the price per service can go up rather steeply if few of those services are performed. And keep in mind that variable costs (materials, medication, labor, etc.) need to be added to this, and the costs for those are not set by the facility, but by the suppliers.

My point: It’s not always greed that leads to high prices; often it’s simple economic necessity. That being said, my poor cats would have died, too. :-(

That's outrageous.

For the sake of putting it out there, I highly recommend the Veterinary Emergency (24 hour) and Referral Group on Warren St. in Brooklyn for a middle of the night emergency in New York City.

They are a referral group, meaning, if your regular vet thinks your animal needs a cardio referral for ex., they may refer you to there. But they're also there and open for 24 hour emergencies.
In my experience they're excellant. Smart, clear in helping you understand what's happening, compassionate, and very reasonable costs. I never got the feeling they were trying to run up a bill.
