Mott haven is back in the news again as it has been on a week to week basis. The victim in the video fought back against his assailants instead of being killed like most victims these days.
ehh....the usual thugs doing what they do. They will be caught. The laundromat around the corner from me was robbed 2 months ago (the first time since they opened over 10 years ago). The guy was hit on the head, but he's fine. He now sits behind the glass. The thugs were caught in a few days and are in jail..and the guys is back at work. He agrees it was an aberration, and dismisses the whole thing.
At sobroguy I don't want you to get me wrong with my sometimes negative view of the city because like you I do agree it has gotten much better... What I don't understand from you though, is why you feel the need to kinda cover up all the flaws of NYC like you have such a vested interest in this city...
Here we are talking about crime on a crime thread, and yet you continue to disreguard it or trivialize it every single time someone posts another crime... can we get another point of view at all from you aside from "don't be black and hang out with the homeys in the bodega at 2am or 3am... (you rotate these every comment)...
I mean even in last year's thread you did not say this so many times... Again just going by what I read, it seems as if you were much more objective last year than this year... you would actually want to discuss the major crimes that were taking place or the white collar crimes that were happening and not simply disreguard them, but that has completely changed this year...
Can we get back to last year and actually open up a real conversation about these crimes and not just shoot them down by saying "oh it was nothing and the person who had the crime committed on him has already dismissed the whole situation as an aberration..."
So what this thread has deteriorated to is a couple of guys on their warm, safe seats patting each other for how it is "not so bad" out there on those streets they rarely, if ever go to.
And I'm sure this certain person if he gets thrown into the pavement and gets his wallet stolen will quickly point out it was an aberration as well.
@ Allen I think I have an idea of who one of those guys are but I really hope you're not talking about me as the other one... because that would be an extremely ignorant comment...
Most of the people who respond on here aside from one understand the situation NYC is in... They understand that violent crime has seen a rise over the past couple of years (mainly because of the economic situation, and they understand that the hood still gets down...
That being said, unless you're under 25, you would know that this city as a whole was a much more dangerous place back in the day... And noone should talk to anyone about how if we're not on the streets 24/7 being a freaking idiot, that we don't know about the hood life...
I have lost more than a couple friends because of that hood life and I have seen real struggle in this city and in my neighborhood and while there is still a good amount of people that still struggle... it is nowhere near what it used to be 15-20 years ago...
You cannot tell me that kids have it as hard these days as back then, when they have all the amenities that only rich kids would have back in the days... tons of kicks, a full wardrobe for a week- to two weeks, 2 phones, one with a plan and another prepaid and most of them its either a blackberry or an iphone and then there up on all the latest technology... Please spare me that bull****...
Kids have it so easy today and all they do is complain complain complain about how hard life is... They would be pissing in their pants if they lived in NYC back in the early 90s...
Now getting back to the actual thread... it seems as if the weather really has had an effect on crime because violent crime has definitely increased over the past couple of weeks...

This is one thing I kept in mind. In spite of all the things our generation goes through who live in these low-income hood areas, I can only imagine what it was like growing in NYC/Newark in the late 80s/early 90s. Even though the realities we face are harsh and real sometimes, the crack era must've been 10 times much harder. I, myself, wondered if I grew up in that time if I would've survived because even if you weren't in the crack game, it was so easy to become a casualty.
Anon I think I am simply being a counterweight to alot of the scary stories that people throw up here. Posting crimes that happens is pointless...yes we know people will be the victims of crime in NYC, and people will be murdered...we got that. So if you want to simply post a headline about a crime, great..not much to talk about...but when you post the story and then say "See the city is going into the toilet" is where I have a problem.
If you look at the trends, the day to day stuff does not matter...and people simply see "Woman stabbed with a pen" and believe "People are crazy in NYC and you are at risk of attack just riding the train." What's the reality? The I dunno how many millions of people who take the train every day do just fine...but sometimes things occur....so the assumption should be it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY/RARE for anything to occur, not the other way around! So I spend my time on here setting the record straight.

I actually agree with you on this. Even though the incident was horrible, people should not be panicking about the using the subway as this event IS truly rare. I've ridden the subway countless times and so far I've never had any kind of trouble. So when it comes to this event, I'm with you.
What about SI? i use to be from there, and i know crime was really bad over near Stapleton.
I think Stapleton's still a hot spot today.
