My parents are visiting from Japan, and they are interested in trying an authentic New York steak restaurant (whatever that means). Any place in Manhattan will you recommend?
Keens is my favorite (Keens Steakhouse . . . Since 1885). The steaks are excellent and it's an "old New York" kind of place (over 100 years old). There are lots of other places, but they don't have the character of Keens.
Peter Lugers in Brooklyn and in Manhattan: Ruth Chris on W51 and Sparks on E46 and Uncle Jacks on W56 and another location on 9th All of them are very good Steakhouses
Peter Lugers is great if you don't mind the trip to brooklyn and they do not take credit cards. People all have their own favorites, and "authentic" indeed means different things. In Manhattan, I prefer Wolfgangs (locations in east midtown, murray hill and tribeca) and Quality Meats (west midtown), but these all opened in the past 6-7 years (although the Wolfgangs' murray hill location is in a classic old space).
The traditional great NYC steak house is Manhattan is The Palm high prices, crusty waiters and all. There are two now in Manhattan (and many around the country as well), but for out of towners stick to the atmospheric original at 2nd Ave at 45th. Close second choice would be nearby Sparks, at 46th off Second. Who wouldnt want to dine where mobster Paul Castellano had his last meal and got gunned down? That's some tasty local history to go with your meal!
The classic outside of Manhattan is, as others have said, Peter Luger's.

The food may be good but sorry, I'll have to pass because I'm not too keen about those outrageously high prices.
