There are a number of expedited passport services in the city. I use It's Easy (Expedited US Passport Services Travel Visa Expeditors), but there are others.

Yes, it will cost more, but it beats standing on line for hours. If you need it done quickly, they're the best option. All of the required documentation is on their Web site.

If you're abroad right now, you'll have a go to the local U.S. consulate.

All that information is online. (https://www.usimmigrationsupport.org...placement.html)

Renewing in person at a office as busy as New York is really, really difficult. You have to call to get an appointment. The demand is so huge that it can be very difficult to get through, and you can only make a reservation exactly 7 days in advance. It's a real pain in the neck.

Personally, I think it's worth it to pay the $50 and have someone who knows what they're doing navigate the process.

If you are outside the USA, you must renew the passport at American Embassy or Consulate. (It doesn't matter where the original passport was issued.)

I obtained my passport applying at my local post office, maybe that has changed because that was almost 10 years ago.

You can do that as long as you are physically present in the USA at the time of sending the application.
