Default Do you identify with New York State?

Here in Chicago, most people do not identify with the state of Illinois. They think of themselves much more as Chicagoans than Illinoisans. I am wondering if it is the same way in NYC. Thanks so much!

My cousin's husband is from the Albany area. He calls it the "agony area". Guess he's saying that area's boring and NYC is way more exciting.

I do not identify with New York State. I call it Upstate NY. I've visited there less than 5 times in my whole life.

I agree with you. I do not identify myself with New York State neither. Upstate NY is very different from NYC. We act different and dress different from those people in Upstate NY. This includes Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc..

I am truly a city girl through and through. I was born and raised in NYC and have always considered myself a city girl. Every time I went on vacation outside of NY, I would tell people I am from the home of the NY Yankees. I mean, everyone knows the Yankees and I am born and raised in The Bronx.

It's not until this past summer that I actually got to experience NY State. My daughter went to college at SUNY Alfred State College, which is 5+ hours from NYC. There is definitely a culture shock. Everything is closed by 8pm, there is not anything entertaining nearby. When we went to visit for her homecoming, we had to drive 30 minutes to get to a movie theater. It's very different. I still refer to that part of NY as Upstate NY and I'm simply from the Bronx.

Absolutely not. For some odd reason.
It's nothing wrong with Upstate NY but it's no reason to claim it.

Everyone should know NYC is apart (Not In) of NY, if people don't then they should research.

Speaking of NYC knowledge I'm sure most people don't know it's only 1 borough on mainland America.
Every other borough is/on an island.

Every NYC school child is taught that. Every subway map shows that. Why wouldn't people realize only the Bronx is part of the mainland? Give New Yorkers a little more credit please.

Default Part of Manhattan on

What about Marble Hill? This part of New York county (Manhattan) is on the mainland too.

I identify with Catholic working class Italian Bushwick Brooklyn. An area that was ethnically cleansed and removed from the collective consciousness. The place became a terlit.
