It is because NYC is filled with a lot of disgusting individuals. People will throw trash into the tracks and spit on the platforms. NYC will never have a modern subway system partly because the entire country itself is far behind in terms of social standards compared to cities like London and Tokyo.

Combined with the fact that people generally do not want to improve their living standards and waste their time bickering over petty things, like that fight about spagetti on the subway.

An entirely fascinating observation. I wonder what part of 'social standards' permits New York's subway to operate 24/7, which no other system in the world manages to do.

So because our system operates 24/7 it is therefore better? I guess having that 1 train running every hour from midnight to 6 am is such a great improvement over actual standards.

Not true. Don't make false claims that you clearly know nothing about. The Chicago El, PATH and PATCO systems are examples of 24 hour systems in the US, and there are others internationally as well.

Go to London , Toronto , Paris , they all have trash issues at certain stations....not all systems are clean even the Tokyo system has a few dirty stations. As for the trackbed , its a problem in almost every Major Subway system , although NYC seems to lag on cleaning things. Compared to the Chicago EL , PATCO , & PATH.... The PATCO & PATH plan to upgrade and modernize all there stations by 2020 while the system is small there also ahead of the times in terms of fare payments , PATCO and PATH use tap and go cards which you can refill form your home. NJT will install this tech later this decade on buses and for regional rail customers...

One can only hope that you aren't referring to Jay Walder (who is actually from right here in the city; he was born in Far Rockaway). Walder is not here to make the subways all nice and shiny. He's a hitman, hired to get rid of as many human employees as possible. And if you check out how the London Underground is running these days, you'll see that it's going to take them decades--not years, but decades--to overcome the damage he did there.
