nice! i was wondering when howard beach was gonna pop up on this thread. i'm surprised no one mentioned it when we were talking about the ultra-gaudy houses. i used to work with a guy who lived out that way. he was braggin' about how some gotti came to his son's christening. hahhaaa. some things never change out there. all in all, it's a nice area...i like it. but, i don't really know anyone out there and it's not the most accessable place in QZ by train.

I was really flabbergasted when it got all that negative press.
To me, it was the last place where I could get off the subway without paying the double fare. I'd go there birdwatching, shell collecting, all the nature stuff I used be really into, and still like.
I'd love to live down there...anybody know a plating shop around those parts that needs a water treatment guy, I'd love to hear about it.
Hell, anybody down around there looking to get into plating or anodizing? I'm your guy.

Do the Mafia still exist within the Bronx and Queens?

Yeah, but from what I hear most of the Italian mobsters in the Bronx have gone into legitimate businesses as a result of the feds. They're all still around, but now they run restaurants, strip clubs, and other random stores instead of busting people's knees. The Albanians were still around doing their thing up until very recently, but there was some crackdown on them a little while back and most of the leaders of the Rudaj were sent to jail. ( Rudaj Organization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Supposedly there's some Irish mob up around Woodlawn/Yonkers, but to be honest I really haven't seen any proof of this. Maybe they're really low-key? ( The Westies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

I went to those parties but dont know of any "Mob" ...they were all great family people. I still have my hats and T shirts.
Now you walk down those street's off the old Rockaway line and you think you’re in El-Salvador. 3rd world garbage would never been seen in that neighborhood when John Gotti was around.
When John died the streets were packed down Woodhaven Blvd 3 deep from the Cross bay Bridge to Queens Blvd. He was the last of the real Mohicans.
John Gotti, Ozone park, Glendale, Ridgewood, Woodhaven RIP

I grew up in HB. It was a nice, safe neighborhood in a time when NYC was a much more dangerous and violent place w/ well over 1,000 murders a yr. The Italian butchers, pasta stores, deli's and pastry stores made it home for me and many other Americans of Italian descent. I still have family there, but the area is too expensive for me to own a home in, and I would rather raise my kids in the area I now live. HB is still safe, but it is much more crowded than when I grew up.
