Yes, those are Dayton Towers. Except for the last three on the west end between Beach 105 St & 108 St. They are rental apartments called Surfside Towers. I lived in a twelfth floor apt facing west... one of the most spectacular views you could ask for with the ocean, NYC skyline & NJ. I was renting a large studio for $400 a month back in the late 80's! Man, do I wish I never gave that place up.

I don't know how long the waiting list is for Dayton but it used to be several years long. Then when you were called you had to hope you met the income requirements.

Keep in mind the public school system down there leaves much to be desired. PS114 in Belle Harbor is one of the best in Queens but other than that it's all downhill. JHS180 has gotten really bad and Beach Cahnnel HS, once a jewel as an Oceanography School, has become a dumping ground. There are three Catholic Schools, St Rose, St Camillus & St Francis de Sales. Then for HS you will have to travel to Brooklyn or up into Northern Queens.

Man, I'm sure them studios are HUGE.

The last time I was in those buildings was when I visited the area as a kid (mid 70s). I do remember going across the Gil Hodges (Marine Pkwy then), and being fascinated going across the bay to Faaaaaaar Rockaway (that's how 8-year old me pronounced it!). That and the row of buildings gave me the impression of George and Weezie movin' on up! (alright, I was 8 then!).

I still feel Far Rockaway is not worth it. First of all it's another one of NYC's usual rip offs. How much do those townhouses cost again? 600,000? You can buy a much larger home in a much better area for a lower price.

Your only paying extra to live within city limits, I don't get it.

Next the area is filled with problems. So why live there especially if you have a family? Not only is there a lot of crime, but the area is not very wealthy, most of the population lives in subsidized housing. The schools suck. And the neighborhood is way out in the middle of no where.

As usual people will take it since it's inside "NYC!". Sorry but I would rather live somewhere cheaper (and all around better) and save my cash to live somewhere tropical when I retire that will make Far Rockaway Beach look like a sandbox after a rain storm.

And lastly, that neighborhood is basically marked for death. A hurricane can and will make the Rockaways a memory within the next 50 years. We are overdue.

I'll pass.

One of the benefits of "inside NYC" is the lower property taxes. That beach home's yearly taxes might be no more than $2500, or better yet, may have at least a 10-15, maybe 20-year tax abatement, as opposed to some beachfront property in Nassau or Suffolk, where the taxes might go through the roof (I'm thinking $5K, $6K-up--I'm being nice!).

But I've stated other issues which may make one pass on the Rock!

For those who want to live in a caostal community just as close to midtown, actually a quicker commute because of the LIRR, check out Long Beach. You can still get a house within a few blocks of the beach for under $400k. Yes, the taxes will be in the $6-7k range but you have decent schools and great sense of community there as well.

Looking at that pic I see a big, bad M F 'er called the Atlantic Ocean living right next door. No way I'm ever living in a house THAT close to the ocean. A nice lake? Definetly. But not the ocean.

bottom line it was built as affordable housing and its nothing but a legal way for the builders to sifon federal funds for their profit !!!!!!!

but the place is on the water and nice looking . but how ironic that all the water fronts and waterviews were purchased by all the insiders first !!!!!!

only thing the left for the community was A train views and the occasional stray dog views
