Hiya,

New here today ... will be visiting the city for the first time. Would like to get some recommendations for a good hotel. Here's some needs:

Comfortable soft mattress - a must!

Close to Manhattan if possible, but not necessary

Pretty room, not too plain - a bit luxurious would be nice

As quiet as possible - I'm a very light sleeper

Price: would like to keep it at or under $300 a night with taxes, if possible.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

Thanks!

Westin and W hotels are known for their soft beds. The beds are actually marketed commercially (Westin at Home Store - Featuring the exclusive Westin Heavenly Bed, Westin Pillow, Westin Robe and much more) and are very comfortable. The newer hotels are usually very quiet; they were designed to block out street noise.

I have to say your priorities are unusual. New York is all about location and convenience. Paying a lot of money to stay at a nice hotel outside of Manhattan is an odd choice. I would suggest spending your money on location. There's so much to do in New York that you're unlikely to be spending much time in your hotel.

Hi tpk: the reason I'd like to stay a bit closer to Manhattan is, the man I'm going there to see, lives there, and I thought it might be convenient to be near his apartment.

Also, I have a very bad back, and believe it or not, firm makes it hurt like hell, I do much better with soft and comfy. I also have Fibromyalgia, if I don't sleep well, the whole day is ruined. That's why I need to choose the hotel carefully.

This is a mini vacation for me, a once in a lifetime chance to stay where I'm not likely to stay again, so I'd love the room to be designed nicely ... I want to pamper myself.

I'm still open to Times Square and other locations also.

OH .. and do you know if The Marriott has the same mattresses as The Westin? I hear they do.

Thank you.

Well, looks like I've settled on The Westin in Times Square. The bed won me over ... so here's hoping I made the right choice.

Thanks TPK

My boyfriend's brother stays there whenever he comes into town and seems to like it. I, personally, wouldn't want to be close to Times Square, but for your first visit, it's a decent location—close to everything, good train access, etc.
