Indeed, inspite of the gangs history and his horrible past, the dude actually did make legitimate efforts toward some sort of progression, ending long violence with rival gangs, promoting black and latino unity, outreach. No doubt he's doing time because he couldn't let go of a lot of criminal elements he was involved with, but there are people out there walking free who deserve worse than death.
