ok. thanks guys. What about another area instead of queens? I travel to up there a lot and i am going several times over the next few months. Is there some place in another area where i could find something for around 1300 to 1500 per month?
is Queens affordable for me if i make 40K a year? What are the cheap and safe neighborhoods in Queens that are close to commute to Long Island?
If 40K is your gross salary, I suspect your take home pay after all deduction is around 27K (assuming 15% tax bracket). This gives you just over 2K per month or over 1K every fifteen days (assuming bi-monthly pay).
You can live in Queens quite easily if you opt to live in Jamaica or thereabouts and only use public transportation (no car - the insurance itself will choke your finances). I say go for it and hang in there until something better comes along.

Can you be specific on what your looking for? $1500 is possible for a 1-bedroom, but extremely difficult for a 3-bedroom.
You might find a place in Jersey for ~1500/month for 3beds in a decent area, but it won't be great...1800 might be more realistic for 3beds in an area with good schools for the kids...
