Default Quality of life in Queens for 40K salary

is Queens affordable for me if i make 40K a year? What are the cheap and safe neighborhoods in Queens that are close to commute to Long Island?

You can do it in Queens. You won't be living it up but you can survive. Don't expect "SEX IN THE CITY". Expect hard working putting a roof over your head. In Queens just avoid Far Rock, South Side Jamaica, East Elmhurst and Corona. I'm missing a few (like much of Hollis and areas around housing projects for example) but someone else should be able to clear it up.

With that income you should consider living somewhere else though. You can get a better bang for your buck. More property, larger home, higher quality of life, lower cost of living, better areas.

My son is making it on $25,000 a year. Right now he is sharing an apartment but he plans on getting his own place.

By living somewhere else you mean another state right?

I don't think another state, but maybe most parts of NYC. I'm sure Huslta will clear this up.

not to be mean spirited but if he's sharing an apt, he doesn't qualify as making it, unless he's sharing it with a bride to be

I live in another state...I have lots of trees outside my window and the whole road to myself when I drive to work in the morning. But if this is a higher quality of life, I'd trade it in a heartbeat. I can't wait to get back to the city.
Saadrajabali....you have to live within your means no matter where you go...and work your way up. There are rich and poor in every American city.

I think you can make it in Queens. I'd try Ozone Park or Richmond Hill. These areas are decent and can be affordable and you wouldn't be too far from Long Island.
