Help? Visiting this summer worried about my safety quite frankly. Young female traveling alone. Driving all the way up from Alabama - what is the cost of the tolls to get into NYC?

Thanks.

Brooklyn isn't that bad. I live in South Brooklyn. It's fine here relatively low crime. However watch out for some neighborhoods like East New York that is where the crimes takes place. Some places in Canarsie aren't safe either, but I do suggest that you visit Coney Island, and the beach it's pretty safe in the day. Just watch out at night though not that great either. Bensonhurst, and Dyker Heights are relatively safe. Harlem is safe except for same spotty areas north of 125th Street. South Bronx has been safer, and isn't the crime filled dangerous place as it used to be like back in the 1970's and 1980's. I would suggest you would give Yankee Stadium a visit. Though do watch out for shady spots around there too.

There are a lot of safe parts of the Bronx and Brooklyn, what is it that you want to see? I'd advise having specific destinations in mind - don't try to wonder aimlessly around huge boroughs.

In the Bronx, you should check out the Bronx Zoo & Yankee Stadium. Arthur Ave is also great for food, but not sure I'd go there alone - they're mostly big family restaurants. In Brooklyn, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, walk along the promenade, eat at an outdoor cafe on Smith St in Carroll Gardens, head to Park Slope and walk around Prospect Park (in the daytime).

There are plenty of tourists on an extended urban vacation currently living in Brooklyn.
Places such as Williamsburg is where they can be found.

Yeah, but you do have to be a little careful in Williamsburg. Spotty areas of crime, and some spotty areas of dangerous places too. Though it's safe in the day. Don't worry though. NYC isn't the 100% gangster town you see in movies, and read about.

I would figure that there is nothing to see in the bad areas. Queens is a residential area and I was advised to avoid going to Queens and Staten Island unless I want to be bored. I am trying to find good clubs to go to in NY does NY have any heavy metal clubs at all?

I think driving around in my Alabama plates would make me a noticeable and perhaps easy target to the troublemakers.

Not really there are people with car plates that are different in NYC. It's a big city people come in from all over the place. Besides no one would pay much attention to you. It's a big city once again, and everyone including me would be in a rush. No one would have any affairs to meddle with you. If we know you are a tourist then you are just one of the people visiting our big city nothing else.
