Default Nice apartments near JFK airport?

Hello all, new here. I just got some questions.

I might be moving to NY soon and I want to know what parts to stay away from. Some info first. I will be working at JFK airport so I would be looking for a place near there, or a reasonable commuting distance. Looking for a fairly cheap studio in a nice neighborhood, maybe in the $700-$900 area if possible. I dont really care about how nice the apartment is, I will most likely never be home. I have no idea about NY, been there a few times when i lived in PA, but never thought about living there. I asked my friends that lived in NY, they said places like forest hills, kew gardens, regal park, bell rose, glen cove.

so to sum it up:
nice neighborhood, dont wanna live in the "hood"
studio apartment in the 700-900 area, can be lower
near JFK airport, or close enough to commute. lets say max 40min drive?

Thanks in advance!

A 40 minute drive can be anywhere on LI as far as Western Suffolk (mid-Island or South Shore) Why would you want to drive 40 minutes each way to work?!??!

However, you'd probably be better off in Richmond Hill, Kew Gardens, Ozone Park, Woodhaven. From there, it's a quick bus ride. In Richmond Hill, Kew Gardens, Ozone Park, you just take the Q10 bus. From Woodhaven, you can take the bus up Jamaica Ave to Lefferts Blvd and then take the Q10. From Rego Park, you would take the E or F train to Kew Gardens (or the Queens Blvd bus) and then take the Q10.

You have to look around in Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven. You can probably find something in your price range (basement studio probably) but make sure it's in a nice part of the neighborhood.

I think you need to budget $900-1000 (at least) a month for an apt. in the areas that you mention (meaning in order not to live in the "hood").

East Rockaway (15minutes, near the ocean), Long Beach (25 minutes), Island Park (20 minutes)
All three are nice, relaxing neighborhood and near the beaches!

yea i was looking around and the cheapest in the nice area was $950/month. but if most of the bills are included in the price i can deal with those prices.

oh and thanks for the input everyone!

Well, here's the deal...in LI if utilities are included then usually the apartment is not legal...which basically means if it's found to be illegal by the cops or whomever handles these things, you can basically be forced to moved out immediately. You probably wouldn't get in trouble- the landlord would, but still it's obviously a hassle to have to just move out without any notice and find an alternative place to live.

So yes, utilities included is generally cheaper then if you paid for them seperately, but...you have to decide if that's a risk you're willing to take. Some people live in illegal apartments for years and nothing happens. It just depends.

Anything in a building generally wouldn't have everything included...except maybe heat, like mine which IS included, but I can't control it- I don't have a seperate thermostat. Other than that, everything else- lights, cable, internet etc I pay for seperately- not included in the montly price (rent/mortgage).

In NYC, the rent normally includes hot & cold water and heating during the winter months. There are a few buildings that rent may include either gas or electricity but this is the exception rather than the rule. Most of the time these are separate bills that the tenant needs to pay.
