Hell's Kitchen/Clinton: safe for baby?
My husband and I are considering moving to the Hell's Kitchen/Clinton area (49/11th) and are expecting our first baby in December. Solely from a danger perspective - running out to get diapers in the middle of the night, and safety of early morning walks in a stroller - do you think this is a bad idea?

In my personal opionion this is a great area however, i would definitely live a little futher east. between 8th and 9th, or 9th and 10th is good but it gets a little shady west of 10th late at night but if you choose to live further east in hell's kitchen you will love it and have a great time and be completely safe going out at any time of the day to do whatever you need to do.

I was thinking to myself "what a dumb question, of course Clinton is safe for children", and then I read the 11th Ave. part. That is really far west and I believe pretty desolate. The avenues are also really long blocks so it will be somewhat of a trek to get to the subway, and taking bus + subway is even worse. Farther east is fine, but I would just be careful because the traffic is so intense.

Why Hell's Kitchen or Clinton Hill for a kid? Have you tried Queens?

Yeah, why would you want to live by 11th ave? It's nothing but car dealerships over there. Also, it's a little pain to walk to the Subway from there. (50th St.) or even futher downtown (42nd)

Last summer there was a resurgence in street prostitution on 11th Av near 47th/48th streets after almost a decade of it dissapearing. 11 years ago I recalled prostitutes and homeless hanging out on 10th Ave in the upper 40's. Not sure how it is now

There are new luxury rentals that were put up between 10th and 11th
The area is gentrifying rapidly. There are few teens around that cause a little mischief, but aside from that the neighborhood really changed

I spend half my time in Hells Kitchen. Everything said is true. Past 10th towards the westside, the area is less lighted, more desolate. Especially at night. There is very little prostitution and homeless but not completely gone. There are rowdy youth out at night & weekends but they interact amongst other youths. There are many gay people in the area too. Also, a large aspiring actor/ actress crowd. It's not bad and it's not thrilling. Just an average Manhattan neighborhood

If I were you, I'd move to Riverdale in the Bronx, Forest Hills in Queens, or Bay Ridge in Brooklyn

hells kitchen
i have lived here for alomst 2 years... i have a child and have never felt unsafe. my parents told me this area was really rough, but they can't believe how it's changed. there is a great pier at the end of my street (free out-door movies in the summer), every subway line 2-3 blocks away, central park 16 blocks away, many pre-war buildings, still reasonably priced... huge community feeling.. i'm not leaving for a while
