Hey all,
I grew up in the 90s and the early 00s when Giuliani apparently destroyed crime in NYC . As part of my job, I regularly spend time commuting to courthouses throughout the five boroughs, whether it is walking or riding the subway, and I never feel a bit uneasy (although I got an eerie feeling in Long Island City the other day). As a young white woman dressed in a business suit and carrying a large leather purse, am I in danger in any part of NYC? I feel completely safe as long as I do not make eye contact with anyone, and completely ignore strangers asking for money or other weird items. Is this appropriate or am I being naive?

No one is gonna bother you. I don't know what it is with "white" people thinking minorities are out to get them. It rarely if ever happens. Look at where the court house is in The Bronx. Smack dab in the hood and lawyers are never bothered.

As a white American I can tell you that most white Americans are brainwashed to live in a constant state of fear. Fear of everyone who is not a white American and even many groups that are white. Blacks, Hispanics,Muslims, Asians, Russians,Gays, union members, the French,immigrants... you name it.Everyone is the enemy out to get ya in one way or another.

A huge number of the posts on this forum are from white people worried about their safety in one way or another.

Fear is a good way to control people so many political groups and institutions do everything they can to promote it.
This fear and inability to accept differences in cultures and opinions is why our society is crumbling.

Isn't that common in every culture though? If people didn't have that sense of preservation there would be no diversity or variety in society. At the same token, we can learn from others.

Anyone needs to be careful out there. Both genders have about the same chance of been robbed or assaulted in the city, but criminals also target women for rape or sexual harassment. There are also lunatics that sometimes go on a rampage and kill anyone that is near them. You just have to observe your surroundings and discern which spots are comfortable/safer for you.

I'm not so sure that Giuliani "destroyed" crime. Giuliani was helped by a nationwide drop in crime.

I've never understood this panic about eye contact. I make casual eye contact all the time. Not so long ago, I walked over to someone to thank him for grabbing me and keeping me from a bad fall when the subway stopped suddenly.

Anyway, NYC is the safest it has been in a long time. Nevertheless, use common sense. Keep your purse closed and tucked under your arm, and wear sensible shoes.

Um, geez, I never knew mentioning my race would create such brouhaha. It's one characteristic about me that may bear on whether I would be a victim of a crime. I also mentioned I carry a large bag. Does that mean I am the victim of brainwashing as well? What is with the racial stigma in this country? If I were a Korean man or an elderly black woman and I wanted feedback as to whether I should feel safe or not, I would include those details as well. I just wanted to paint the most vivid picture possible of myself when asking whether I should feel safe or not.

I think it's valid. Stereotypes exist and are used amongst all groups, including criminals. When I was in Europe, I was targeted for every scam in the book because I was American. Some of it was pretty funny. But my point is, to ask whether I'm safe, and include my race amongst many other factors, does not equate to fear of blacks, Muslims, or Hispanics (although I admit that French union members have caused me to shake in my boots a time or two).

And Giuliani hardly "destroyed" crime. He had a really good publicity team, though.

It means you have a much, much smaller chance of being a victim of a crime than if you were a black woman carrying a large bag in the same spot.

It sounds like you are saying whites are never victims of crime in the city. That's obviously not the case.

You have to compare the percentage of people living within a community. There might be more victims of crime who are black in a section like Brownsville, but they might only take up 17% of the total black population there. And although there are fewer whites victimized, the percentage of them would be about 30% of the total white population in that area.
