I need a hobby and miss playing the violin. I'm sure there is SOMETHING out there in NYC, but I am tight on funds. I thought that something would exist where one can play in an orchestra and be sort of "taught" I guess (although I played for 4 years I am rusty) and then turn around and perform for pay. Obviously I wouldn't expect to be paid and realize that money would be made off of me performing with any orchestra. I am simply looking for an outlet. I used to be in choir and orchestra and I am so out of tune and miss having them as a hobby. However, I cannot afford private lessons or really much of anything. Are there alternatives out there? I hope my post makes sense.

Not sure about orchestras, but if you're interested in choirs, there's a site called Vocal Area Network (van.org) where announcements for choral auditions are posted. There are both pro and amateur groups represented.

I don't know anything with lessons that are free. I have two friends that play with orchestras occasionally (for pay) but they have been paying a lot longer than four years (no offense).

I would recommend looking at meetup.com and maybe you can find some music clubs to play with. I heard that they have a group for everything and see them advertised frequently.

I don't know, but I love your post. Have you done a little googling for amateur groups? As someoen already said, keep checking (or initiate!) Meetup for possible groups. I see there's something amusing called Really Terrible Orchestra in Westchester.

I don't know of any place where you could get violin lessons for free. Most private teaches charge at least 50 an hour. If you have some money, you could try to hire a high school or college student who might charge a minimal amount.

However, there are tons of amateur musical groups all over the city. There used to be an orchestra in Forest Hills, but don't remember the name. Some of the colleges welcome members of the community to play with them. I know they used to do that at Queens College. You could call the music departments of some of the colleges and they may have some suggestions for local orchestras. Kingsborough community used to have a summer band consisting of community members, but not an orchestra. If you wanted to come to Long Island, I could make some suggestions. As for performing for pay, that is highly unlikely.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! I guess I'll search at the places you mentioned.
