Rank Your Methods of Transportation for Getting Around the City
For me:
Walking- fastest way to get around a neighborhood or anywhere less than 1-1.5 mile
Cabs (don't take them it too much as they're too expensive)
Bus (good for crosstown trips above 59th Street)
Subway (can't stand my 1 hour commute on the 5 train anymore and all the delays that come with it)
I would take a private car around Manhattan if I could afford it but for now they're only for airport trips.

Subway and bus are about tied...use these to get to/from work. Cabs are for when I am being lazy and don't feel like walking to the subway, or when I am going out. Walking is for around the neighborhood, and sometimes home from work on nice days.

I think it's slipping in the ratings due to over crowding. It's really bad during rush hour because it's the only line that goes along the east side.
Also, I have to travel to Phelam, in Westchester and realize I'm better off taking the Metro North to and from the city; I take MN when I can afford it. My trips on the 5 seem twice as long now that they cut out express service during the rush hour and weekend construction has me avoiding the 4,5,6 trains on Sat and Sun as I have to transfer two times just to get into Manhattan- and then when we finally reach 125th it goes local and there's a delay every other station.
I personally think the N, Q, R lines are some of the best but that's for another thread.

As a tourist, the subway was immaculate. Gets you anywhere you want to go.

1. Subway/Walking - It goes hand in hand
2. Bus
3. Rickshaw (j/k)
Cabs will always be last on my list.

I pretty much only walk and use the subway. I ride in my pops/friend's whip no and again though. Only take the bus when I have too. Very rarely I'll catch a cab. Never take Taxis.

I use the subway combined with walking exclusively, and I don't take buses or cabs unless I have to.
