One day in Greenwich Village and Chelsea
I'm arriving at Penn Station at about 10 a.m. Friday morning. I have four hours to spend before an interview at The New School at 2 p.m. Upon leaving the interview, I'll probably check in to the Comfort Inn in Chelsea, and then I'll occupy myself for the evening with dinner and a visit to a few bars. I leave Saturday morning. What I should do before the interview?

Before an interview, I don't think you want to do anything too exciting. I would recommend walking around Chelsea Market ( chelseamarket) or perhaps the High Line ( The High Line).

I suggest resting in your hotel room before the interview, so you'll be in good shape. But after the interview, why not walk around the New School's neighborhood? (Will this be your first time in New York?) Just walk around without an itinerary--it will be fun.
As for the evening, my friend, there's a whole lot of places to go to! I don't know the Chelsea area all that well, but you could stroll down to the Meatpacking District. I know, I know, it's horribly touristy, but it can be fun since you'll be going there as a visitor. Start with a drink at the overrated Pastis, just to see what it's like. Then stroll to the West Village and have dinner at, say, Barbuto or Cafe Cluny or any of the places on West 4th. Then keep strolling eastward, through SoHo, dropping in on any place that seems interesting. End up at the Lower East Side.
I hope you'll be able to wake up early enough the next day to catch your train.

Well, a few things: I don't plan to check in until after the interview. I want to walk around, get lunch, and maybe stop at a coffee shop before I head to The New School. I've only been to NYC a few times. I'm still pretty clueless. So, anyway, I'll just exit Penn Station and start walking. I'm fairly close to The New School, right?

Depends on your definition of close and what building of the New School you are traveling to.

My interview is at 72 Fifth Ave. I suppose I can take a cab from Penn Station and hang out in the Village.

I spent some time checking out New York Magazine's bar guide in hopes of narrowing down my evening entertainment options. It's helpful, but I would like some advice from forum members.
What I don't want: DJ, frat bar, super trendy, super expensive, gay bar, romantic, very loud music
Can you suggest a few places that I'd be comfortable for a single guy in his late 20's who will be alone?

Then you don't want Chelsea or Meatpacking. I suggest taking the L Train to the East Village.
BTW, it's very quick and easy to get from Penn Station to Chelsea by subway, if you want to save money on a cab. You could even walk. It's not that far.
