My wife and I live in Weehawken, NJ..right next to lincoln tunnel. Her family lives in Queens. It seems it's just smarter and more economical to use midtown tunnel and pay the $5 then go through the traffic of queensboro bridge, even at night.
Depends on where you are going in Queens. What time, etc. There's always the Tri borough option.
In any event, its not as if the bridge is ALWAYS jammed.
IMO, people who get caught in traffic jams are the follow the crowd types, and don't know their way around much.
For example that tunnel gets just as jammed, if not more so, as it empties right into the LIE, which all too often is a ridiculous parking lot. I virtually never drive LIE, and when I do I get onto the service road asap! Consequently, I NEVER take the tunnel.
Anyway, the Tri borough to me is the best option, as you avoid cross town traffic between tunnels/bridge.
I also never take the center roadway of the Queensborough.
I only occasionally run into traffic on the 59th street bridge. You can always just check the traffic report before heading out to decide which way to go.
Bus from Weehawken to Port Authority...then the subway to Queens?
