I visited both Phoenix and New York City. As a foreign national, I have to say that Phoenix is no where close to NYC. I can imagine how hard you had to adjust. By moving from NYC to San Francisco means probably from experiencing the east coast culture to tasting the waste one. But moving from NYC to Phoenix is like from the exciting world metromoplitan to a deadly town. There is nothing you can feel about Phoenix except the heat from the desert. It is not all about the weather. It is just nothing there, a cultural desert as well.
I do love New York City. The city has many funs, and the vitality is keeping you alive everyday. As a young professional, you have endless things to do. New Yorkers have very strong feelings toward their towns, either so deeply in love or hate it to the bone. That is a very attracting thing. The city draws so much feelings out of you till exhaustion. An old famous saying" If you love someone, send him to New York; if you hate someone, send him to New York"
The people are actually friendly, not like what the rumor says. One day my friend and I were at the Statute of Liberty. We got lost and were looking at a map. Someone from a distance approached us and asked if we need help. Boston and DC are a lot worse than NCY.
One amazing thing about NCY is the foods are incredible, all kinds of foods. And you do not gain weight no matter how you eat because you walk so much in the busy city.

Another vote for greatness from this corner (although, as a native born Brooklynite, I could conceivably be accused of bias!)

TO LEARN, WHAT IS HAPPENING IN ANY PARTICULAR CITY/TOWN, ETC., ONE HAS TO BE ABLE TO TALK AT LARGE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT LIIIIIIIIIVE THERE, and stay for a period of time, researching, reading the daily local papers, and checking the older local news. Most of the cities in California, Florida, and Las Vegas, have a very transient population, along with lots of problems. And lots of cities/town do not emphazise their problems due to being afraid of scaring tourists away, like the State of New Jersey, the newspapers there barely mention crime. Except, that I worked for over 25 years in Emergency Medicine in many towns, and I know that is loaded with drugs, alcohol, and the homeless, but because it is spread out, it is hidden. The Media in NY reports everything. NEW YORKERS NEED TO VIEW other cities' forums, like Orlando, Bradenton, Miami, Sarasota, in Florida, Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, Chicago, LAS VEGAS, and San Bernardino County, Long Beach, Compton, Van Nuys, Oakland, in California, to see that our problem is NOT ONLY A NEW YORK PROBLEM. One of our biggest problems besides terrorrism is the amount of gangs that are emanating from our country's jail system , who are controlling the drug industry. HELLO, PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!!: WHITE GANGS, BLACK GANGS, LATINO/SPANISH/HISPANIC GANGS, and who are taking over these ghettoes. Please, read Glen Beck's new book, and see his program. Is detailed all in there. WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE FOREST and SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the TREES!!!!!!

Totally agreed. Wherever you go, there you are. Geography can't change your problems. If your city truly does not meet your needs, work to change it or move.
I live in Seattle. Our transportation system sucks. I moved downtown and found that the city feels small. NYC feels expansive and has a fabulous transportation system. 'The Cheap Bastard's Guide to NYC' sold me on your town.
I like a lot of what Seattle has to offer, I'd just like to see it on a bigger, more populated scale. NYC is lookin' like the best in the US.

Wow, PhxGal07 - you are so right! I just moved out here from NY. Orig. from Brooklyn, but lived up in Wappingers Falls (Dutchess County). I just got tired of the commute for 10+ years. 4 hours or more a day took a toll on me. I was stupid, I left a good job because I was EXHAUSTED and stressed out. I came out here for a more peaceful life. I love it here, but the salaries are so very scary. I don't know how people afford to live here. I had to pay taxes on my rent! I have to pay trash, sewer & water and I don't even "own" the place. In NY, it was included in your rent. Although, paying $1150 total is better than $1200 or $1300. But look out! There's no jobs to cover the expenses! The utilities and the food prices are outrageous! They want to pay $30k a year here for very HIGH EXPECTATION JOBS. That's ridiculous! I made more than double that in Manhattan! So, it's really more like half of what NYC pays. I don't understand how people make a living here. It's got to be the damn RIGHT TO WORK laws which is totally insane! The crap the employment agencies make you go through for $15 an hour? It's sad. Pathetic, unfortunately, I'm broke from moving now, so I have to take whatever I can get.
