Hello!

I'll be attending a one-day meeting in June at the United Nations (1st Ave & E 44th St New York, NY 10017 (or 3 UN Plaza 10017),and am looking for a budget room/hotel near the facility for 2 days.

Budget: $30-80 per night(yep, measly but I am a medical student on my own!)
Proximity: walking distance (no car),or easily accessible by public transport.
Duration: 2 nights.

Any ideas on where I can start looking or good recommendations? Thanks!

Are you serious? You do realize NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world. A place for the rich. You've NEVER been to NYC have you?

You will not find ANY hotel in the city of New York in that range!

Your best bet w/b a youth hostel, and even that will be outside your range.

Luck!

Nope, never been to NYC.I've landed up with deals within that price range at Florida and I was hoping I'll get lucky at NY as well.

How bout something shared/or within $120?

You might be able to get something for $120 in Long Island City, which is in Queens and only one or two stops to midtown Manhattan. In fact, it would be a very convenient location for getting to the UN if you are unable to stay in Manhattan. Try searching for Long Island City hotels on tripadvisor or one of the other sites.

I have a friend who has been successful with Priceline.com in the past as well - usually she gets something for around $100 a night, but she knows how to work that system and she also doesn't mind staying in Jersey City and taking the PATH train in. Also she doesn't mind staying one night in one hotel and swtiching to another hotel for the second night.

The link I already provided in the other post shows hostels, which will be cheaper (generally) and often shared bathrooms, etc.

Don't forget about the room/hotel tax. I don't know how much it is, but it can add quite a bit to the bill.

Super 8 motel in Astoria on Broadway may be near budget. Not a place I would stay nor reccommend, but in our travels about the city GF and I have run into people who have stayed there. They appear to have faired well, or so we think.

There is a bus stop across the street. The bus will run you up to the N subway line. Yellow cabs can be found on 21st Street, 2 blocks from the motel.

The motel is near Costco and across from Long Island City High School.

The Holiday Inn in LIC was $229 last Summer. There is a couple of motel hotels in Newport/Jersey City you might check which are near the PATH train.

BTW, comparing NYC to Florida is like Day and Night. Florida, on the whole, is cheap. NYC isn't even remotely so.

Try the Vanderbilt YMCA on East 47th Street. Great location, not-so-great service.
