How is the job market for IT/Software Developers in NYC?
Did the recession take a toll on most IT jobs? Are there good, stable, well-paying job opportunities in the programming/software field currently in NYC, or is it very competitive?

There's bunch of threads on this topic and you can search for them, it'll be good read and will answer most of your questions.
You will have no issues finding a job with that level of experience. Do not use recruiters at first. They will only push down your throats companies that need to use recruiters. Use your network first to find interesting companies.
Today, the best IT jobs are niche IT skills. Like... not just SAP but SAP integration with another system. The billing rate is like 100+ an hour and these boys just rake money, and interestingly, most of them are foreigners on workers visa. There's absolutely no local talent available for these niche skills and I'm not even kidding.
So, the local talent needs to do some homework and hunt these niche skills down, rather than getting hung up on the basics like J2EE, databases and mainframes. Too many sharks in the sea and it's too hard to complete, and this is what drives billing rates down. My friends get calls for Oracle 11g app suite for 55/hour. That kind used to fetch 150 an hour in 2001.
Sad. And you always have to compete with offshore.
Or you should go my way and become cross-functional. Like the process oriented management analyst with domain knowledge and a heavy technical foundation. In this case, you are covering two positions for the company which hires you and it's extremely difficult to replace you. I improvised after my job was move out twice, to India first, and then Brazil.
And I know this solution I have now will not last long, it might last three more years and I will need to improvise again or try moving up the ladder. It's the reality in today's corporate world.
As a fully funded start up, I thought this would be a good place to get a response, if not I apologize. I am looking for someone with a java/oracle backround to help us integrate our technology platform (User interface open source whitelabel) to our suppliers. API and SDK. Does anyone know where I can find someone like this? Best places to look?
This would be a full time position in the NYC area with competitive salary, benefits and possible ownership for the right person.

Any insight would be helpful.
Dice, stack overflow, monster would be good start. Dice is geared toward Finance related IT jobs so if you are not in that sector, may be waste of money. Monster is just monster, got lot of candidates so you may find a ton and will need to filter out a ton. Stack overflow is sort of more niche and will have smaller amount of viewings but you'll probably end up with better candidates.
If your in hurry, pay up and get third party recruiting companies. I don't know how it is now but the rates were pretty negotiable 8 month ago. If you are willing to nurture a college grad, then contact the schools with strong tech programs to get in touch with their career dept.
Good luck.
