hey guys. need advice on a hotel for the nyc marathon 11/6/11. i appreciate any runners out there who may be able to give an out-of-town runner some advice. planning to arrive 11/3 and leave 11/8. looking for reasonably priced place, i.e., less than 200 bucks a night. thanks!
I have run the race several times but I live here. One year got a hotel on Staten Island so I wouldn't have to take the bus/ferry. If you want hotel suggestions try the forums at runners world.com. they have a sub-forum for NYC marathon. Good luck! I'm not running NYC this year (ran it last year and want a change of pace) but it is a fun race!
Personally I think you could go either way- get a hotel downtown closer to the start or get one uptown closer to the finish in the park. Don't know what the prices will be though...
thanks. i found a good deal on a marriott out at laguardia and another in brooklyn. not being familiar with the area puts me at a disadvantage. going to study the race course this weekend to see if i can get a better idea where i need to be. would rather be closer to start then finish.
I have a friend running this year and he's from out of town. I don't know whether he's already made reservations or not, but from discussing it with him, I know that the buses from Manhattan leave from in front of the NYPL, which is at 42nd and Fifth Avenue, and he plans on staying in the vicinity to make his morning easier.
I would take a similar tack and find out where the various buses are leaving from, then find a hotel close to the departure point, so you make it easy for yourself that morning. I suspect you'll have enough to be thinking about around 4 AM that morning. Good luck.
I would never take the bus to the start. I did that once- took a bus from Brooklyn (when I lived in Queens) and it sucked. The buses leave so early that even if you are first wave, you end up waiting around in Staten Island. That year it was cold in the morning, and the ground was damp. It was not a good way to start the day.
I'm not sure where you were looking in Brooklyn. I can be of more help if you tell me where the hotel is located. I would skip LaGuardia. There are no subways over there so you would have to take a bus or a cab to a subway or to Manhattan.
Last year I stayed with friends in Manhattan. They drove me to the S.I. Ferry and then they have shuttles from the ferry to the start. That was fine. I got a hotel room on Staten Island a few times and that is actually my first choice. But I would advise you to plan to take the ferry. There is a nice view, you can spread out, use the bathroom, walk around. Take the latest ferry possible.
You should also check like homeaway and see if maybe you can find an apartment in manhattan? I know the hotels jack the prices for that weekend but even if you are very centrally located it is a total pain to get to the start.
