Coming up from MD to NY this weekend for a show on Sunday. I have determined that the cheapest way for us is to drive into Manhattan. I have found parking garages with pretty reasonable rates but am concerned about traffic in Manhattan. I have only driven in Manhattan a few times on weekends, never had a problem, and don't remember it being anything bad. I am wondering if traffic is usually light on Sundays? I found a garage on 39th st. that is not far from the tunnel but if I were to drive around a little would it just be endless traffic delays?

Thanks!

In GENERAL, traffic will be lighter in Manhattan on a Sunday. HOWEVER, just make sure that there are no special events planned for whatever date you will be driving there...parade, street fair, bike tour, marathon, etc. etc. Weekends might be relatively lighter on traffic, but weekends are also when traffic-causing special events take place.

There were a handful of times where I drove into midtown for work on a Sunday and hit traffic because of random things I never would have thought of like some Harley Davidson bike tour that closed off streets, and other stuff like street festivals which also closed off streets.

Thanks for the info. It would be this coming Sunday which is Memorial day weekend......

What about downtown if we wanted to get really adventurous. I remember going down there one Saturday evening and it was dead. It was as if there wasn't enough traffic. If its dead like that I wouldn't mind spending a little time just driving around.

Well, on the one hand, holidays like Memorial Day weekend are traditionally when the city empties out because of people leaving to go on vacation. On the other hand, I can tell you right now that May 29, 2011 is right smack dab in the middle of Fleet Week 2011. Not 100% sure what effect this will have on you, per se, but I think there are supposed to be military bands playing in Times Square in the middle of the day, and since you are driving in to see a show (I'm assuming on Broadway), that might get dicey for you with a car.

Also, there will be the Annual Spring Jubilee on Lexington between 23rd St. and 34th St., pretty much all day.

Not too sure about downtown. As Sunday approaches, I would check with these websites for updates:

NYCDOT - Weekly Traffic Advisory

NYCDOT - Weekend Traffic Advisory

NYC DOT - Special Traffic Advisories

Thanks. I will look into that and see if I can figure how how they would impact me....

Does anyone have success with the coupons on the Icon parking website? It seems that you can park a lot of places all day for around $15 on weekends. That seems pretty cheap considering I just paid $24 to park in Baltimore for a few hours.

I also had made reservations with bestparking.com, I assume that works? If not I have printed a bunch of coupons for other garages.

The coupons and reservations work, except during a "special event," when the garage charges either a set rate, or their normal rates during off-hours. There will be a sign at the entrance to the garage if that's in effect, but just ask before you agree to park as to whether or not they will accept coupons.

Lower Manhattan should not be too difficult on a Sunday evening, especially Memorial Day weekend, so you should find it easy to drive around, though parking can still be an issue.

Mike,
Manhattan on a Sunday is as good as it gets. But still beware of the Kamikazi Kabs who will cut you off unmercifully when they sense fear.
