Hi New Yorkers,
In a few weeks I will be spending 4 days in Manhattan. We (I will have my 16 year old son with me) have no real itenerary planned, all we know is our hotel is in Mid-town and we want to see a few Broadway shows and walk around Central Park (so we really are open to any suggestions!).
I know there are a ton of choices as where to eat. Any suggestions on places that we should check out that arent really expensive? We are not pickey eaters at all, so anything you can throw out we will definately check out.
Our trip is an open slate, so any suggestions you have would be much appreciated! (feel free to throw in any tips on how not to stand out as a tourist)
With a 16 year old..You must try John's pizza and Italian. Inexpensive, and the food is to die for! It resides in a converted church on West 44th st between Broadway and 8th ave. A real NY classic.
With a 16 year old boy, I suggest you visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum (Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum) which is on a former aircraft carrier docked in the Hudson River in the Midtown area of Manhattan.

Red Bamboo is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. They serve a variety of delectable vegetarian and vegan cuisine at moderate prices. For Chinese cuisine, one of my favorites is Vanessa's Dumpling House.
the best food Ive ever had in my entire life is a place called Taim Falafel. Its on waverly place downtown. If you dont go its your loss.
red bamboo is a cool vegan restaurant too. but taim falafel is the bomb.
Rep to you! I agree about Taim Falafel. In fact you may be the one that mentioned Taim well over a year ago in another thread? When I was last there I had the Sabish sandwich, excellent!
If your ever in the Bronx check out Bruckner Bar and Grill for its lamb burger, or Giovannis pizza which are my favorite here in the Bronx, or even check out the seafood spots on City Island. As for Manhattan my favorite thing to eat is Chicken over Rice from the Halal guys on 53 and 6th av or Carniegies on 7th and 54th deli or Katz Deli on Houston street.
NYC is one of the restaurant capitals of the country, so it's rather difficult when you provide no guidelines. I have no idea what "aren't really expensive" means to you. I mostly end up in Chinatown and don't even know what my places are called. You could start by leafing through guidebooks (which is a particularly good idea if you dont have an itinerary), which always include less expensive restaurants, or look at postings in Chowhound. When you're doing Broadway, look for restaurants west of Broadway, like around Ninth Avenue.
Also, keep in mind that it might be nice to do one upscale meal, and, if so, places tend to be cheaper at lunch time.
Thanks for all the replies! I love Italian so will check out Johns for sure. Although I'm not vegan, as long as its good, I will give it a try. The air and space museum sounds like fun for both of us!
