Anyone care to explain how Papa Johns/Dominos makes profit in NYC? (New York: neighborhood, to live in)

I don't know how you can mention Papa John's in the same sentence as dominoes... I'll give you that Dominoes has tried to get better but Papa Johns was an original mom and pop chain that branched out and kept the same original recipe... Papa Johns to me is absolutely delicious and it at least matches the other pizzeria if not flat out beats them, around my way...

There's a Papa John's about a 45 second walk from my apartment and they have pretty good coupons online from time to time. I've gotten two larges for under $10 a couple of times. They're nothing special, but it isn't terrible. There are some mom and pop pizza places by me as well and they're really nothing to write home about either.

When I was living in Cleveland I really enjoyed going to Fridays. I still enjoy Fridays...in Cleveland though. The ones in New York are gross and in tourist areas. I feel like anything that caters to tourists ends up being gross. It seems like because they aren't at home they think all etiquette and respect go out the window.

I order Papa John's online sometimes when I'm feeling über lazy.

They may not make a profit but break even. Their presence is here more for market presence. They profit elsewhere to compensate the lack of profit here. The prices are cheaper than your local pizzaria and as said above, many transplants/suburbanites like the familar taste.

Eating Papa Johns/Dominos in NYC is like having Taco Bell in Mexico, or going to Red Lobster in Maine. Just No.... Any self respecting NYer avoids these chains like the plague.

I can see a tourist having that mindset, that you've got to experience "real" NY pizza or whatever, but I live here and there are times when I tired and just need to get something quick and easy. All the wonderful little hole in the wall pizza joints will still be there when I wake up in the morning.

Not to mention the ones by me aren't much of a step above the chain places. Just because you're in a little shop doesn't mean you don't make pizza that tastes terrible.
