affordable SAFE neighborhoods in nyc
i am interested to know if i could afford to live in a good safe neighborhood in nyc with a $35,000 - $40,000 a yr salary. maybe $2500 a month or less. im single w/ no kids. ive been torn on deciding on san francisco or nyc. so far im leaning towards sf b/c it seems so much more laid back. tell me what you think. thanks

Come to NYC, you'll be fine. Be wise with your money and save to buy property.

Areas like the Lower East Side and Yorkville are laid back. You will probably like it there

I'm assuming you're using your salary to pay your rent? If so, there's NO WAY you can afford $2500/month!

Yeah, $600 a month is more realistic. Don't forget the 45 times the rent rule.

For $600 you could rent a room (shared bathroom & kitchen) in many decent neighborhoods of the Bronx. I don't know if you could pull the same off in Brooklyn and Queens though for such a low ammount.

i was planning on having a roommate or 2, so i wouldn't be paying the full $2500.

Yeah but even shared apartments in Manhattan are REALLY expensive. Look around for prices, I believe even apartments that are being shared by several people (4-5) are still going to cost you at least $1,000 a month (more likely it will be closer to $1,500 a month). Even $1,000 a month in rent is going to be hard to swing on a $35k-$40k salary.

thanks for all the help. i wasn't planning on manhattan, i know it cost a bundle. im just looking for good neighborhoods with young people.
