I've heard before that you don't tip hairstylists if they are also owners of the salon... Is that true?

I currently tip my stylist, because I wasn't sure that he was the owner until after a couple of visits. Then I didn't know how to stop without offending him. But given the high cost of services in NYC, the tips do add up! I asked a salon receptionist once, and she said that most people do tip the owner.

So, do you tip owners? If so, how much? Do you take the hairwasher and blowdryer's tips out of that, or in addition? (In NYC, that's often 2 additional people.) What about co-owners? How much do you tip non-owner stylists?

I never tip the owner.......I tip the gal that washed my hair and I give a generous tip to the styist I've been going to for many years.

I would just stop tipping the owner.

Do you guys think that the "rules" are different for the higher-end salons?

The place I go to isn't too posh by NYC standards, but it's a fairly nice place on Bleecker. It's a small salon; the ambience is very laid-back, very relaxing. The owner charges $90 for haircuts, and I had been giving about $18-20 in tips (including the $2-3 for the shampoo girl).

Arggh, I hate tipping in general!! I never know how much to give without looking like a scrooge or being a sap!

I think you tip regardless. They are still doing a service for you.

You wouldn't tip the owner, if they were not styling your hair of course.

Its funny that you brought this up. Because I've been going to a barber shop I didn't used to go to before, and I was not sure if the guy who cut my hair the last few times was the owner or not, and the same thought ran through my head. I'm pretty sure he's not the owner though, because he always seems to be cutting hair.

It's very different in a woman's salon.

This is a longstanding thing.

This is a funny situation. I've been a stylist for 16 years now and just opened my own salon this year. Most of my clients do tip me, which I am very grateful for. I believe it was known a long time ago that it was offensive to tip the owner. I do not see a need to tip an owner if they are not your stylist!
If you have received an excellent service and you would like to tip, it is an extra way of saying Thank you! This is my way of looking at it.
I price our cuts, colors, etc. at the current rate and take into consideration of the overhead and also the salons around (to be somewhat similar, yet on the higher side for the higher end salon that we are) This is the price of your service. Tips are a gift!
You shouldn't feel uncomfortable, If you are able to give, great! If not, you will still receive an excellent service! My name as the stylist as well as the Salon's name goes out with every client's style! Hopefully all stylists will be grateful for the tips you do leave!
Stylist & Owner

Been a hairstylist for over 30 yrs and even when I did clients in my home, I was tipped. General rule is 15-20% of the total. Tipping is always a voluntary action based on your appreciation of the service, not to include tip jars in ice cream parlors or Starbucks!
