As best as I can remember the story in the late 50's and early 60's was that any of the buildings/houses along that stretch were occupied by squatters.

Snake road also had its shacks on it. I didn't know anyone who lived there though. There was even a road that went into the swamp with shacks on it. People must have lived out there in the 40s.

Shacks
I do remember the shacks on Snake Road mostly the one with the hub caps on it, and I do remember two good looking girls growing up there but I can not remember their names.

Funny , I've been here since '53 and not quite 1 block east of Brookville Blvd on 148th Ave . We never called it Snake Road , always just " Brookville " . We used to catch Garter Snakes in the swamps between the Gypsy's and the LI Press shack . Those were for curiosity and when that was satisfied , toss them at the girls . As far as houses on Brookville in the swamps . Going south , near the wooden bridge on the left was that row of shacks / houses , and the Augustine's Farm on the right . I think it was a 1 cow farm . In 53 in came lopping up my unpaved block . I was only 7 then . There were a few houses past the row of shacks on the left . They were kept up and were bordering Brookville , not on any street like those shacks . I remember seeing the purposely placed rocks bordering the house or pathway to it . They were even painted bright colors . Not very long after '53 were there fires , monthly at least . The structures were gone in just a few years . The wooden bridge outlasted them all . I helped a friends sisters boyfriend put a bigger engine in a 1958 Chevy where those shacks were , must have been 1960 ish . I think the wooden bridge was still there . Brookville was a cinder road , but I am not sure when they paved it .

Thanks for the history. You are about my sister's age. My parents first moved to Rosedale around 1938. They rented a house on Mayda Road, before buying one near St Clares.

I'm new to this forum and glad I found it. I also moved to Rosedale in 1953 and lived on 229th between Edgewood and 144th Ave. I also had Mrs Fry for kindergarten and then went to St. Clare's- graduated in 1965. I must know you. I remember the stores on South Conduit very well. The Seagull Bar, Louie's Butcher shop, Marie's candy store, Miller's Grocery, and a hair salon, and a TV repair shop. And across Lansing was the Mobil gas station. I remember it had milk vending machine where you could get a half gallon of milk for a quarter.
I remember walking down to 147th Ave. with my mom to go shopping in the Associated Food Market. You had to climb up 4 or 5 concrete steps to go in. The inside had only 2 aisles and old wooden floors. But we were able to get everything we needed. Mom was so happy when they built the new store around the corner on 228th St. It was much bigger and more modern.
And of course I remember Brookville Park. I remember my mother taking me to the playground and swinging on the metal swings, sliding down the metal slide , and climbing up to the top of the monkey bars. When I was older, we would go ice skaring on the lake, sleigh-riding down the hills behind the tennis courts. That was the best.

I think the name of the pub across from Bohack's was the Clubhouse. Also, I do remember Betty's luncheonette. Mod cut: it's not about people, it's about a place. Does anyone remember when the post office was used as the church before St. Pius was built. I went to St. Clare's and graduated in 1963.

Sound like you know a lot about Rosedale. I went to P.S. 138 and graduated from SGHS in 1972. Married my grammar school sweetheart(a Rosedale girl). Played baseball with the Rosedale Sports Association....Farm League,(the gully) Babe Ruth, Queens/Nassau League. Some coaches...Mr Ulrich, Mr Crowley,Vinnie Porti,Mr Velez,Pete Striano.
I lived around the corner from Burger & Shake on 249th Street between Hook Creek and Francis Lewis. Rode the Q5A to Springfield Gardens H.S.
Lived next to the Mattia's, across from the McGraths, Dave(Dave's Candy store) was another neighbor, Johnny Gehebee(sp?) Mr Hennel, The Fraziers,The Walters(Diane & Karen) Remember Al Stomper and the Blum Paper Box Company...sneaking in the Drive-In through holes in the back fence....beer can heaven back there.Spent time in Winky's deli...great salads and fish cakes. A big treat was a pizza from Pizza King...great sausage pie. Eugene the Good-Humor ice cream truck driver.
My wife is putting together a picture history of Rosedale Mod cut: no soliciting .
