I grew up in Rosedale during the 50's and 60's. It was the best place for a kid to grow up. You never had to lock a door, I was 10 years old and could visit friends from school who lived 5 blocks away and not have to worry about anyone abducting me or mugging me. Everyone knew everyone and everyone watched out for each others' kids. I remember going to Brookville park in the winter to ice skate, the Pizza King, 243rd Street, etc. I lived on Caney Lane and 139th Ave. Does anyone remember?

Sounds like you might have lived close to the Patterson's and Walkers on Caney Lane. It was big treat to go to the Pizza King as a kid....all the boxing pictures when you walked in.

I remember staring at all those boxing photos on the walls in the Pizza King whenever I went with my father to pick up a pizza to go. Rudy or Felix 'somebody' comes to mind as one of the most featured boxers on the wall, he might have been the owner of the Pizza King. It was a $1.25 for a large pie. Living near the Nassau County border where Francis Lewis and Hook Creek Blvds. meet, the fastest route back home was to drive back down 147th to 243rd, make a left toward Sunrise Hwy. and make a right where 243rd met up with Memphis Blvd. and take Memphis to 148th Dr. It would be several years before 147th Ave was a through street and we didn't have to reheat the pizza. By then the price had skyrocketed to $1.50.

I and all my freinds always referred to it as the Custard Stand. Would open in the spring and close in the fall. By my standards better then Carvel.
P.S Always seemed to be a cop car there.

It was well worth the walk we made to get to it. Your right they always closed for the winter.

Ohh girl, I remember those racial times. You have it down to the letter. I remember Jeanine Albergo on the cheerleading team at SP Gdns H.S. I was on the booster squad Yes there were alot of decent non-African people in the community. P.S. 181, JHS 231 and SP Gdns H.S. Rosedale is a great little enclave. I used to live on the "other" side of the park, from 1972 until I moved over to Rosedale in 2000, but I was always on the Rosedale side because everything else was over there! I was never bothered by anyone but I was aware of the racial tension. Anyway, I'm still here and raising my family and the kids can still play on the block until dark.
