It still is great . You just have to not leave your keys in the car .
Park facing the right way on the street .
Lock your doors .
Stay behind those locked doors .
Actually I have had few problems here , 1953-2009 so far . Many places I had wished to live on this rock have had news worthy crimes , where Rosedale has not . It was better , so has most other places , just ask the neighbors in the towns you all fled to . If none of you ran like rats off a sinking ship in the 1980's when the schools were reorganized , the place would still be mostly what you admired . I get along with as many neighbors as I did many decades ago . You folks didn't get kicked out , you gave it away IMO . I hope for your new towns sake you stay put , or move for other reasons than what most of you fled Rosedale for .

Separated by a parking area is the VFW Hall followed by a building housing a florist shop/garden nursery that uses the empty lot at the corner to keep its stock. Directly across from the VFW hall is the Rosedale Funeral Home on the corner. Next to it is the first location of the Rosedale branch of the Public Library. Next to the library is Elsie’s Candy store. A row of stores continues to the corner. Among them is a German delicatessen, two or three stores down from Elsie’s where you could vote for ‘Miss Rheingold’ every year. There is a store across 246th St. on the corner selling fresh fruits and vegetables that are displayed outside. On the opposing corner is a store that was a stationary store and later a pet shop in the late 50’s.
There’s not much else in the way of businesses as you continue south down Francis Lewis Blvd. The lot that the present-day Jewish Center sits on is vacant but the Lutheran Church is standing. Francis Lewis, south of 246th St. was originally just a cow path that was later paved with cobblestones. Blacktop had been laid on top of the cobblestone leaving the old stones exposed along the edges. The road is narrow and when two cars pass one another it’s not uncommon to hear the rumble of tires over cobblestones as each driver attempts to keep as far to the right as possible. There are virtually no sidewalks along the entire stretch of Francis Lewis, only well worn footpaths with sandy shoulders separating the paths from the road. On the eastern side of the road the houses are built much further back from the road than on the western side.
Located on the southeast corner of Francis Lewis and 145th Ave. was a small grocery store. A little further south is where 147th Ave. meets Francis Lewis. Whitey’s Riding Stable was located there. There is one structure still standing on the northwest corner that was once a part of the stables. Looking up 147th Ave, there were some houses on the right but the left side was all open fields all the way past Memphis Ave where 147th Ave ended. Houses existed on 147th Rd with their backyards sharing a common border with the fields. Near where Weller Lane is today, the area became swampy and directly across from the front P.S. 138 the land dropped off into a swamp. The quickest way to get to 243rd St by car in those days was to take Memphis Ave to where it meets with 243rd a few blocks south of Sunrise Hwy. 147th Ave won’t become a through street until sometime in the late 50’s.
Where Francis Lewis and Hook Creek Blvd merge into a single road there was, and still is, a gas station. On the other side of Hook Creek across from the gas station, stood a grocery store with a luncheonette to the right. The single road created by the merging of Francis Lewis and Hook Creek continues on a hundred yards or so to a blind curve turning left. At the curve, on the right side and well off the road there stood an old farmhouse with an out building running parallel to the road that fresh produce was sold from. The land directly behind the farmhouse was a working farm until the late 50’s and all that was grown on it was sold on site. Nassau County begins a few hundred yards further down the road.

I remember all these places! The stationary store was Brownings. I remember Elsie's very well, they were so nice. I lived in Rosedale from 1950 to 1972 when I got married and moved to Woodhaven. Really brings back lots of memories!

The other was where 139th Ave. meets Sunrise Hwy. on the west corner unless I'm confused and thinking of the small garage on the eastern corner that didn't pump gas but instead just did repairs. What do think up1950s?

I remember Winkey's Deli, I lived around the corner on Caney Lane and 139th Avenue. I was friends with their daughter Linda Winkelman. I remember Mrs. Fry, and Mrs Cervante at 138. I graduated from there in 1962. My sister, who is 8 yrs. older than me also went there, so it has been there for quite some time. Rosedale used to be the absolute best place to grow up!

Does anyone remember the bagel man and the milk man? The bagels were still hot and the milk had cream on top. Dugens used to come around and my mom would buy fresh cakes and we would ride on the truck. Try that today with all the law suits. I remember going off to Mentone and drag racing, these were great times!!
