Rosedale now in 2008 is still a nice area but mostly black people with a west-indian background. There's a few small time gangs around and you can hear some shots fired off late at night once in a while (probably weapon testing if I had to guess) but otherwise its a cool residential neighborhood.

I suppose what you say is true and I'm sad for you because in mentioning the way Rosedale has changed you should also acknowledge that the 20% of decent Blacks who originally moved into the neighborhood endured some seriously racist behaviors. Does anyone recall the bridges being ripped apart in Brookville Park to keep the blacks on one side? Does anyone recall the tennis court nets being taken down and having to be replaced with dangerous fencing and the words '*****s go home' spray painted on the courts? How about the times when groups of White men drove the neighborhood throwing bricks into the picture windows. (The front window of my home a victim several times). Not to mention my friends and I being chased as pre-teen girls through the park by white teenaged 'clans' because the movies let out late and we had to walk through their 'neighborhood' after dark. And in addition putting out the lights in the park to make it more dangerous. And we only went through the park because walking along the conduit usually guarenteed us being splashed by some unknown liquid from white teens in cars.![]() It was horrible to see the neighborhood turn the way it did. It upset me when it became two Rosedales because my white Italian friends could safely walk to my side but I always needed an escort on the white side. And despite the racist indignities I still grew up with a really great attitude but it is usually the blacks who do all the cowtowing & accepting or end up in a body bag. We don't have the luxury of being racist lest we give up the better equipted educational facilities, the higher paying jobs, the nicer homes and neighborhoods. Don't get me wrong 20% of the Italians I grew up with, the Albergos, the deCurtis', Basta's, Colletti's so forth and so on had no problem with being my friend. They also weren't part of the clans or mob terrorizing the streets. Sounds real f@#$% crazy when I put it that way. But hey I grew up in Rosedale at a time when Black homeowners houses were being burnt to a crispy shell in order to send a message that they weren't welcome on certain blocks, actually on the white side of Rosedale. And here I though having become the first black Cheerleader on an all white Jets Cheer Squad was an accomplishment I wanted to share on a forum that seemed to be eager to exchange memories of a better time. Well as usual I guess it's only better for the MAJORITY and not the MINORITY.Last edited by SeventhFloor; 05-01-2008 at 07:20 PM. |

Joe Jenette you had a great idea that someone had to turn ugly. I grew up in Rosedale from '70-'04 still work in the area but moved someplace 'SAFER' as Tom20349 suggested. You know without blacks and crack and crime. Oh I'm just being fasicious as I am black and where I go so does my skin and as we all know by Tom's assessment 'crack and crime'.
Growing up in 'Mobsdale' (as was secretly referred to because of all of the alleged mafia activity and watching 'Goodfella's' where I was able to pretty much place all the locations in and around Rosedale, Valley Stream etc., and seeing all the busts take place) it wasn't only fun but exciting as well. Hey if we're going to point fingers let's go for broke. Say what you will from now on. I'm reporting this forum and I'm leaving it for good. |

![]() My mistake. The forum was started by ProudCapMarine. And I'm not reporting anything as I myself was just as bad as Tom in exposing the stereotypes we grew up with. Enjoy remembering your quaint Rosedale childhoods. |

The Rosedale Vietnam Veteran Memorial is the second (2nd) oldest Vietnam Veteran memorial in all the United States.
Lets make it a reunion at the Memorial. MEMORIAL DAY 2008 Hi, Fred from Rosedale here. We are pushing ahead with plans for the monument's 40th Anniversary. I met a Vietnam Vet over this weekend, while cleaning up the Memorial area. He is Arthur Larsen--former helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Came in from Harrisburg, Pa (5 hour drive) to visit and see monument. What a great guy--seems alot of vets are coming in to see monument--thanks. Im glad to be involved.
