Going to New York City for the first time.
I'm sure somebody has asked this question before but I didn't find it so here goes. My family loves Richmond Virginia so much that we NEVER travel. All my life I wanted to go to NYC the place just seems so amazing. So we are going for a couple of weeks around August and early September.
Everything in NYC costs so much, the hotels are extremely expensive so we were wondering if there was a hidden secret hotel somewhere that would be from 200-270 a night and be a really nice hotel as well. Also we have no idea where in Manhattan we should stay? My sister wants to stay in Chelsea or Soho but anywhere where we can get around the city generally quick is nice. Lastly are there any things that you consider a must do while in New York that most people don't know about?

The St. James Hotel is right by Times Square and very inexpensive. It's pretty average in what it offers, but it's in a fantastic location and a great price. You probably won't be staying in your hotel much anyways while you're visiting, just to go and rest your head. So for that, this is a great place.

Stay in the midtown area, that way you can get to places easier. When I go on the NYC tripadvisor forum, I see tons of people saying they spend about $150 for a decent hotel. Maybe you can post on there. Lots of locals give advice there, plus tons of tourists who have been to the city multiple times and know where the good/cheap hotels are. I don't think we're allowed to post links to other forums here, so just go to tripadvisor.com and search for New york city, then click "forum" in the list. That will bring you there.

I suggest you try a very inexpensive inn with prices that start at $99 a night - ask for that. Achieve Corporate Housing | Achieve Housing
It is very nice, friendly and VERY clean. My family stays there all the time.

NYC is so written-about that there is nothing most people don't know about. A lot of the fun of the city comes from just walking around. Chinatown / Lower East Side is particularly good. Take your folks to Katz's deli.
Best guides to NYC are the Rough Guide and the Michelin Guide.
Whatever you do, avoid the Statue of Liberty and the South St. Seaport.
